Taylor Throws Money Around, Breaks Law, Loses.

I thought I was finished writing about Charles Taylor, but the man's misdeeds just won't stop hitting the news. Taylor smashed the conventional election wisdom by getting shellacked despite outspending Heath Shuler by over 2 million dollars. From the N&O: "In the 11th District in Western North Carolina, Democrat Heath Shuler spent $1.7 million in upsetting Republican Rep. Charles Taylor, who spent $3.8 million. That includes $2.7 million that Taylor loaned his own campaign."

Back in 2004, Taylor broke the law by refusing to file campaign expenditures to the Federal Elections Commission, and now they're whacking the lumpy former Congressman with a big fine -

Washington Post: "Rep. Charles H. Taylor (R-N.C.) spent millions of his own money defending his House seat in recent years. Despite lending his campaign well over $2 million, Taylor lost to Democrat Heath Shuler in November. Now it appears he will have to shell out a bit more.

The Federal Election Commission announced last week that Taylor's campaign committee had agreed to pay $91,000 in civil penalties for failing to file disclosures of personal campaign spending in the 2004 election cycle. The law requires candidates who are spending substantial sums of their own money on their campaigns to notify the commission and their opponents."

O.K. That's it. No more Taylor stories. Until the next one.

Glad you're keeping an eye on Chuck

That's a lot of penalties, though it's probably a rounding error in one of his deals with the Rooskies. Serves the cheater right.

I'd like to forget him

But the damned Google Alert just keeps on delivering the detritus to my inbox.

There are some within Taylor's camp who speculate he plans to run again in '08.

God help him if he does. You've never seen a blogger deliver the body blows like I will.

Body blows won't do anything to Ol' Chainsaw anymore

Which means we need to shift to good old fashioned America's Funniest Home Videos-style nut shots, complete with BONK and BOING sound effects.

"making things with sound, text and pixels..."

Maybe his other brushes with the law

will catch up with him and he will have lots of press during the next two years. Lots of bad press. For some reason, I just can't imagine him running again in two years.

Robin Hayes lied. Nobody died, but thousands of folks lost their jobs.

For some reason?

Ya mean like the fact that he got his ass handed to him by a rookie and burned all his rubles on an embarrassing campaign only to end up a loser?

:)

That would be the reason :)

....and so eloquently put.

Two to watch

I agree that it's hard to imagine Taylor getting back into the fray, especially if there continue to be investigations and fines. And then there's his health.

Keep in mind, however, that the R's certainly realize that any Congressman is most vulnerable in his first bid for re-election. With Shuler's swearing-in just a couple days away, it's not too early to look at the R's bench.

Two to watch (and start to do research on, and start to blog-slam): Sen. Tom Apodaca of Hendersonville and former Henderson County Sheriff George Erwin. Both well-respected, popular, potentially serious contenders from the Republican stronghold of the district.

Thanks Mark

We'll have to keep an eye on those two. It's great to get an early start.

Blue Dog

US News & World Report interviews Heath Shuler:

The 'Blue Dog' Factor

Washington is buzzing with speculation about how incoming moderate freshman Democrats like Heath Shuler of North Carolina will change congressional dynamics. The ex-NFL quarterback will be a member of the "blue dogs," a group of budget-cutting Democrats, mostly from southern states, whose ranks will swell from about 37 to 44 in the new Congress. Shuler defeated eight-term Republican incumbent Rep. Charles Taylor in part because Shuler vowed to fight against special interests.

as long as by blue dog...

you mean not going along with republicans on anything, I'm okay with that title.

I like how Republicans, including Bush, are NOW all up in arms about those little add-ons, like the $250 Million bridge to nowhere. When they were in power and the money was going to their districts, it was step right up to the buffet. But, now that Dems are in power, well, we have to watch what we spend.

RobertP., I don't think any self-respecting restaurant would let

these pigs in....don't you mean "Trough" instead of Buffet?

No matter that patriotism is too often the refuge of scoundrels. Dissent, rebellion, and all-around hell-raising remain the true duty of patriots.

TrueMeckDem on Myers Park Pat

"My opinion of Pat has changed over the years. I used to think he was truly a man of the people but the longer he has been mayor, the less I think of him.

As with most cities, Charlotte has three political parties: Dem, Rep, and Chamber of Commerce. Pat is definitely the puppet of the COC here. What is good for business is good for Charlotte and Pat ... very personable guy, he has gotten a bunch of Dems in these parts to vote for him but I don't trust him."
