Thank you David Price

I would like to thank Rep. Price for his support for closing down the School of the Americas and his co-sponsorship of HR 1707, legislation that would suspend operations at the School of the Americas, renamed WHINSEC, and investigate the history of human rights abuses and failed policies of the institution.

Of the 125 co-sponsors of this bill, Rep. Price is the ONLY NC member of congress to put their name on the line.

The School of the Americas (SOA), in 2001 renamed the “Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation,” is a combat training school for Latin American soldiers, located at Fort Benning, Georgia.

Initially established in Panama in 1946, it was kicked out of that country in 1984 under the terms of the Panama Canal Treaty. Former Panamanian President, Jorge Illueca, stated that the School of the Americas was the “biggest base for destabilization in Latin America.” The SOA, frequently dubbed the “School of Assassins,” has left a trail of blood and suffering in every country where its graduates have returned.

Over its 59 years, the SOA has trained over 60,000 Latin American soldiers in counterinsurgency techniques, sniper training, commando and psychological warfare, military intelligence and interrogation tactics. These graduates have consistently used their skills to wage a war against their own people. Among those targeted by SOA graduates are educators, union organizers, religious workers, student leaders, and others who work for the rights of the poor. Hundreds of thousands of Latin Americans have been tortured, raped, assassinated, “disappeared,” massacred, and forced into refugee by those trained at the School of Assassins.

There are a lot of reasons to thank

David Price.......this is a good one. I know this is one of your "pet" (I don't mean that in a bad way) causes/issues. I admire your persistence and appreciate this post. Front-paged because it is important and informative. I know this isn't a kitchen table topic and it isn't on the front burner in this election but it certainly can't hurt to shine some light on it. Thanks, TMD

Vote Democratic, the ass you save may be your own.

I am on the SOAW national board and we try to praise our helpers as well as try to wake up those that are a little slow in their support.

Official Motto of the School of Americas

"You can't make an omelet without raping and murdering a few nuns."

We train people to become members of "counter-insurgent" paramilitaries to oppose trade unionism, land reform, and all of these other things that threaten God, America, and apple pie, and then look the other way as they rape and murder Americans abroad. Not just any Americans, but white women engaged in a faith-based charitable mission.

Well, I have to give conservatives credit for intellectual flexibility; they can and do drop the crude "America, right or wrong" jingoism from time to time to honor their higher loyalty to the Internationalist Brotherhood of Capital Mobility.

Now if we can get other "progressive" Congress members from NC

Now if we can get other "progressive" Congress members from NC to co-sponsor this bill we might be able to close down this murder for hire school.

Come on Miller and Watt, show some backbone, put your name on this bill.

Close the SOA!

Thanks for blogging this. How dismal that Rep. Price is the only sponsor from NC, but I'm always glad to see him taking pro-active stands against violently unjust policies that are widely opposed by his constituents.

Preparing for this years protest and vigil

We are in the middle of preparing for this years protest and vigil which will be held at the front gate of Fort Benning on the weekend before Thanksgiving.

Last year we had 20,000 people there and are hoping for more this year.
