That not-so-little N&O article on Pam's House Blend

It seems my email and voicemail were full of reactions to today's Raleigh News & Observer's profile of me by Sadia Latifi, "Blogger gets respect: Durham resident writes on progressive issues."

It's a good look at the blog, with quite a bit of personal background that people may not know about me -- my father's side of the family has deep roots in Durham's political history, and the reporter gave a good summary of it.

Actually most of the information I gave to Ms. Latifi I didn't think wouldn't make it into the article. You know, you sit down with the reporter for a couple of hours and figure they'll pick a few quotes here and there and it will end up a little squib somewhere in the back of the paper, but it's a full-blown feature piece...with photos (argh!). But at least it gives non-bloggers a peek into my world. I have no idea what you all think, so I'm putting a diary up for your reactions (both to the article and the info in it).

It's pretty amusing that more people in DC know me for my political blogging than people here in my own home state.

Congratulations, Pam!

I was just going to do a short diary on this but I'd rather just post my remarks here:

Standing outside of Krispy Kreme, Pam Spauling and I were preparing to deliver a petition to Senator Dole’s office when a woman coming through the drive thru stopped and said, “Are you Pam Spaulding? I read your blog.” The woman was a staffer with the Hillary for President campaign.

I asked Pam if she gets recognized often, which she replied, “No, not really.”

Well, it’s happened again today. Pam has been recognized by the News & Observer for her tireless activist work. Those of us who have had the opportunity to meet Pam, may well have gotten the first impression of her to be both kind and humble, and she is. Yet there is fierceness that underlies her drive to work passionately on progressive issues. She’s fearless. Fearless.

As the N&O noted:

"Her blog is one of the most preeminent online. It's a great way of educating progressives and the LGBT community of what the issues are and how to take action on them," he says. "It pushes the envelope and really challenges people in the community to think about issues in a new way."

Congratulations, Pam on receiving this much deserved recognition!

Good article, Pam

I got called for an interview and gave the reporter all sorts of gushy stuff - but I guess they wanted some dirt. I could tell when I finished the phone call that nothing I said would make the cut.

I'm proud of you, ma'am.

the irony of the timing

of a profile of a black lesbian North Carolina political blogger/activist juxtaposed with coverage of the legacy of the late Senator Helms in the same edition.

Have times changed a tad? ;)

AMEN

And I think that's exactly the message that was being sent.

Dome just remarked on the *irony* of Obama's cancelling his Charlotte stop right just as our flags are being lowered to half staff because of Helms' death.

But shouldn't someone have pointed out that it was only fair? After all, Jesse decided to make his exit before he could bear witness to a black man taking the White House.

It is a wonderfully positive profile

of one of the best assets North Carolina has - Pam Spaulding. I'm proud of you, and glad to know you.

I loved it!

And I also thought that it was a very interesting juxtaposition to the Helms coverage. Keep it up.

Beautiful!

And well deserved recognition. Good article, too. I reckon the ol' news 'n disturber ain't so bad some days. :)
