The BlueNC Virtual Gubernatorial Debate

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Last Saturday, the idea of an online forum for engaging the Moore and Perdue campaigns was floated here at BlueNC. Both campaigns responded positively, and a ton of good ideas were proposed by readers in comments, as well as by email.

Here is our best current thinking. I want to be clear that neither campaign has accepted this specific proposal yet.

Proposal

A single two-hour evening session on a date to be agreed upon by both campaigns. Ideally it would be 8 - 10 pm or 9 - 11 pm, when our readership is predictably high. We'll need to steer clear of dates for other debates or major sporting events.

Prelude

Three days before the event, we will post two open threads for warm-up comments and questions. The two threads will be side-by-side in two green blocks at the top of the front page. We will ask a neutral reader (Linda Cloud) to flip a virtual coin to see who will be on the right and who will be on the left. Each post will include identical text with a single link to each campaign's website.

Readers, candidates, staff members, media and anyone else will be free to comment or ask questions on the preview threads, though there is no expectation that campaigns will respond or participate. Whatever works for each campaign is totally up to them.

The Big Day

One hour before the event is scheduled to kick off, we will post two new threads at the top of the front page (in the green boxes). Whoever was on the right side of the page for the preview threads will be flipped to the left and vice versa. Again, the text will be identical. I will welcome both candidates, link to their websites again, and also link to the preview threads.

In all likelihood, readers will begin to ask questions right away. If that doesn't happen, I will select a question from one of the preview threads and post the same question for both candidates. That should get the ball rolling. Candidates and their staffers are free to answer all, any, or none of the questions as they see fit. There will undoubtedly be more questions than they have time to deal with, and they will be free to circle back at their leisure to answer whatever questions they desire, or not.

Candidates will be free to engage with each other as well. For example, if Mr. Moore sees something on the Perdue thread that warrants a comment or question, he is more than welcome to post there. And vice versa, of course.

Also, staffers may post and comment too. We had originally thought that we'd get the campaign managers on for separate sessions, and we may still try to do that. But for now, we're planning to let the candidates speak for themselves if at all possible.

When two hours have passed, we'll post a "thank you" comment on both threads. That comment will signify the official end of the virtual debate, but will not close the threads. Readers, candidates, staffers, etc., will be free to keep up the discussion for as long as they want. The two live-session threads will remain featured in the green blocks at the top of the front page for 48 hours after the sessions are officially ended.

We looked at a range of alternative technologies, including web cams, live-chat, etc., and determined that this is not the time to experiment with something we haven't done before. This "side-by-side" event will operate exactly like any of our live-blogging sessions, except that the two sessions will be concurrent.

Today is your last chance to weigh in on this. Tomorrow I will contact each campaign asking them for dates when they have a two-hour block available in the evening to participate with us. Fundraising and campaign events are usually wrapped up by 9, so I'm optimistic that we'll find an opening fairly soon. Once I get their availabilities, I will look for a date that's open on both schedules, let the campaigns know, and then lock it in.

As I said above, neither campaign has seen this proposal yet, and neither has agreed to it. In the spirit of transparency, we're doing this all out in the open. Worst case, we can fall back on separate sessions.

Your thoughts?

I like the idea

despite the fact that concurrent sessions might be difficult to keep up with for readers who have not made a decision yet and would like to follow in real time. Also - this is likely to attract quite a bit of traffic. Have we made sure our servers can handle it?

Traffic

We should be good there, but we'll double check with Media Temple to make sure we're as prepared as we can be. Betsy recently instituted some system upgrades that should at least assure us that nothing will be permanently broken.

The neat thing about blogging is that it is really timeless. I find myself going back to live sessions from months ago, and I suspect these threads will have a long and active presence.

From what I've seen on national blogs, and even here, campaigns come with a small army of staffers who can help them sort through the opportunities. That said, I know I'll be switching back and forth between both threads like crazy.

I'm thinking that thread moderators (you, me, Betsy?) might want to be on an open phone line the whole time. I can set up a toll-free conference line so we can jump on any problems and resolve them quickly.

Linda...I'll do everything I can to make sure we're good to go

I will disable all video, etc on the front page and other than our ads, will streamline as much as possible. I will also throttle everything that isn't necessary, so as load demands it certain unnecessary features or functions will shut down. We only use a tiny amount of our bandwidth each month, so that shouldn't be an issue. By the end of the year we'll probably need more memory, but for now, we're good to go.

Thanks to all

for the great comments and suggestions in the original post last week. We're trying to break new ground here, but we don't want to discover we're treading on quicksand. That's why we've lowered our technology sights and focused only on what we know we can execute.

Time is too late

I think 7pm to 9pm. With a two hour time frame folks who eat dinner toward the beginning can still come in for the second hour and those folks who need to leave around 8 to put kiddies to bed are there for the first hour and then those of us who regularly neglect our families can be here the entire time. I don't take calls after 9pm (would somebody please tell that to all the young men calling my oldest daughter because they don't seem to believe me?!) and I think most folks really do start winding down after that time. Plus...it's candidates for governor....we will probably have unnaturally high participation.

Fair enough.

I'm just trying to make sure there are as few possibilities for conflicts as possible. I go to a lot of fundraisers, and 7 pm is prime time.

Plus, our readership is usually higher after 8 or 9, which is why I lean later.

Let's plan to give options to the campaigns for what works best for them.

OK...I know the taking calls part didn't make sense

but I meant it to show when we start winding down... I didn't sleep last night. I'm beat....or maybe that's beet.

I think the operatives should sign in under their....

own user names. I have no problem with Chief of Staff Tony Maroni (Jk) making statements, but I would prefer that he/she was making them in their own name and not under the "Bev Perdue" or "Richard Moore" account.

Now, another thing that might happen is that the candidate and staff sit there finding questions they like, then pulling out their talking points and having their press people write the responses, which are then "entered" by the candidate.

I'm disappointed nobody liked my Kyte.tv debate idea. We could have had a sponsor!!! And, the candidates would be live.

I loved the idea

but it would take more time (and have more technology risk) than I can deal with right now. You forget how far you are ahead of 99.9% of the world.

Regarding how the campaigns respond to questions, I think a little of everything will happen, which in my view is very cool. If we get a bunch of canned stuff, we'll know. If we see sock-puppets, we'll know.

Regulars here have gotten very adept at knowing the real thing when we see it. How the campaigns actually manage the process will be interesting all by itself, and worthy of much commentary and critique. From what I can tell, both have raised their online games considerably over the past few months. It's the new frontier!

Yeah....I know the sock puppets

I will be monitoring that sort of thing the few days leading up to the debate and the day/evening of the debate. Also....I know folks don't always use their mulitple accounts as sock puppets. There's a difference between having a public id and a private id when the two never meet and sock puppets who feed off each other.

I think it's important to know that it's really the candidates

Since, in many races, it often isn't.

Yup...that came up on the site...I think it was either FunLuvn1 or hmmmm....gee now can't remember.... but another BlueNC member brought it up and three of the candidates jumped at the chance. It will be a bit more cumbersome with four/three, but we're working on it.

In was funluvin1

and it will be a bit more cumbersome, but it would be awesome.

and THEN can we use Robert's idea?

A live chat setup would be infinitely easier, especially if we're going to do a four-way LG discussion.

I like the idea of live chat.

I think we'd have to test it before we went with a live 4 way debate, though. We don't want to look foolish. Jimmy Carter might kick our ass.

Be the change you wish to see in the world. --Gandhi

Let's do it.

Who wants to be in charge?

I know little on the operational aspects of a livechat

but I'd be more than willing to help test out any aspect of it. I guess I just think that there's a certain aspect lost in a live-blog with not only a large amount of content being discussed, but when the very opportunity to have candidates willing to participate is prime. I know the foundation of this entire community is not only based on democracy, but also the blog format, however a live chat would provide the most fluid and flowing format for any opportunity. It can obviously be archived and saved, allowing those who weren't quite live enough to catch up on what was discussed. Perhaps I'm just rambling, but yeah. Live chat. Word.

Live chat

is definitely the best way to have a really free-flowing discussion of ideas. At it's best it's fantastic. At it's worst, it's a nightmare. We can work something out, I'm sure, whether it's using gmailchat, aimchat, or Robert's kyte tv (isn't that the name of it?)

I'm sure we can have enough people willing to test it. Time is short, though, if we want to have it tested in time to do something before the primaries (and fit it into everyone's schedule.)

Good times.

Progressive Discussions

In the spirit of transparency

This is the email I sent to both campaigns tonight, Jay Reiff (Moore) and Zach Ambrose (Perdue).

Dear Jay and Zach.

As I hope you read online, there is much enthusiasm for a virtual debate between Mr. Moore and Ms. Perdue at BlueNC. I have received more than two dozen emails and scores of online comments suggesting a wide range of options for how such a conversation might take place. After digesting all the input, we've decided to keep things simple, as I've outlined in the post below.

http://bluenc.com/the-bluenc-virtual-gubernatorial-debate

One of the great things about the format we're proposing is that gives both candidates the opportunity to manage the level of interaction as they see fit. They are free to answer some, none or all of the questions, as they see fit, and may also engage with their opponent if they wish. Plus, the schedule should allow you to participate without interfering with the many events and activities your campaigns have to manage. We're asking for two hours one evening, starting as early as 7 pm or as late as 9 pm.

Here are the other important details:

One hour before the event is scheduled to kick off, we will post two new threads at the top of the front page (in the green boxes). Whoever was on the right side of the page for the preview threads will be flipped to the left and vice versa. The text will be identical.

At this point, I have two simple requests.

* First, I'd like to know if you're still interested.
* If so, I would like a list of dates you have available to participate between February 11 and April 30.

I ask that you be back in touch with me no later than noon on Saturday, February 2nd.

As soon as I receive both lists, I will identify options that work for both of you and send you an email inviting you to participate on the earliest possible date that works for both of you and for the front-pagers at BlueNC.

Please call me if you have questions.

Thanks!

James Protzman

PS I am sharing my outgoing emails with the BlueNC community, but I will not share your responses unless you give me explicit permission to do so.

We're on!

No date yet, but firm commitments from both campaigns!

Here's the email we received from Eli Kaplan of the Moore Campaign.

James,

Thank you very much for organizing this. We think it has the potential to be a very interesting format and, like I posted a couple of weeks ago, Richard is committed to participating.

Reading the thread about the virtual gubernatorial debate, there were some concerns expressed about the capacity of the site to handle this kind of format since you’ve never used it before. We share those concerns and just want to make sure that all of the technical kinks are worked out. I’m sure you would agree that it’s in everyone’s interest – both of the candidates, the managers of the site, and the BlueNC community generally – to ensure that this runs as smoothly as possible.

Feel free to share this message with your readers if you would like.

Thanks a lot,

Eli

Separately, I received a phone call from Zach Ambrose of the Perdue campaign saying they would participate and would be back in touch soon about possible dates.
