Today's Journal Amused Me...Twice

First there was the Editorial opining that Bush's abuse of recess appointments and Harry Reid's use of pro forma sessions to curb that abuse were somehow equally abhorrent.

As if that wasn't stupid enough, then came the "duh moment:"

Reid appears to have taken it upon himself to discipline the president of the United States..

How dare the legislative branch exercise oversight of the executive branch! What are they doing, reading the Constitution or something?!

Next was an AP quote of Mike Huckabee describing why Social Security privatization didn't pass in 2004:

“The president had the right idea, but he used the wrong word. When he used the word ‘privatization,’ it scared the daylights out of a lot of people,” said Mike Huckabee, a Republican.

See, it wasn't the lies about the program's solvency, or the popularity of the program that stopped Bush and Company from scrapping it. It was that one doggone word.

No, Mike, it was the thought of abolishing the most popular government program of all time that "scared the daylights" out of people.

That fact was apparently lost on the AP reporter, and the Journal's editorial page that chose to run a hit-piece on Reid instead of a truthful piece on Social Security, which the Journal calls one of the more "important issues" that need to be addressed.

The Journal

It's funny that the Journal never shows up on my list of papers to even bother to look at. I check Asheville, Wilmington, Charlotte, Greensboro and Raleigh. Plus sometime the Fayetteville Observer. I can't think of any good reason to read the Winston-Salem Journal.

The Journal isn't bad per se

they just get confused sometimes. They are caught up in the whole "he said, she said" journalism. They prefer "the Democrats say the sky is blue, but Republicans say that it is pink."

Of course the true quote should read "the sky is blue, so why do Republicans insist on calling it pink?"

Before I start ranting and raving about it, this brand of journalism drives me NUTS! This is why so many people deny evolution and global warming, and that Saddam Hussein orchestrated 9/11.

It's easy to blame Fox News for this, and they are pretty bad, but the media as a whole cannot be let off the hook.

Since when did telling the truth make one partisan? I thought the truth was a noble thing. Sometimes I want to grab these people by the neck and scream "LOOK UP..THE SKY IS F*&^ING BLUE!!!"

I like the Journal

Their state level political coverage seems to usually be written by a real life reporter who is actually employed by the paper the material is published in. Thats pretty rare.
