Topic of the week: Plastic

Hey General Assembly! When you convene tomorrow and you're looking to do something that would actually make a positive difference immediately, consider passing a bottle bill.

Or maybe you prefer this?

What do you want the bill to do?

I'd be happy if recycling was conveniently available statewide. I take my recyclables from home to work with me and over to the town recycling center there. I have to admit that a lot gets by me at home. If we had curbside recycling (we have curbside pick-up), we'd be much more likely to catch those cans and bottles that don't make it.

Charge for plastic

Put a hefty deposit on plastic bottles to discourage their use, for starters. This is an example of where the "cost" plastic to the global community is in no way covered by the dynamics of free-market fundamentalism.

My rememebrance....

is that all the plastic bottles in Morocco had a deposit on them, back in 1999. Sidi Ali and Sidi Harazem were the two types of water, if I recall correctly.

If only they did that for the ubiquitous black plastic bags that litter the country.

Prior to 2005, I lived in Lee County, Fl. for 13 years.....

and I thought they were very creative in their recycling efforts. Rather than have an 'extra' cost on purchased cans and bottles, they collected them separately during trash recovery. They had a plant for all those plastic bottles, where they would be cut up into small pieces. All that waste was sold to companies that re-make them into containers. Same with the aluminum cans. So the county did make some money for their efforts, and every household had their county hampers to be used to put out their waste once a week. They also had some kind of incinerator that converted the burning of trash into electrical energy, which saved some expense on their electric bill. The county population was about 200,000, which is probably similar to some of the larger cities in NC. So it would be more practical for more densely populated areas. Just another option for a problem that will need to be resolved someday.

Plastic?

I thought you were talking about this:

According to the Fed, Americans are now carrying $951.7 billion in revolving credit card debt, up 5.9% from a year ago. The average household with credit card debt runs a balance of about $8,000.

Of course, that's not what the banking industry is about. Lenders collected a record $18.1 billion in credit card penalty fees last year, up 69% from 2003, according to consulting firm R.K. Hammer Investment Bankers in Thousand Oaks.

Benjamin: Yes, sir.
Mr. McGuire: Are you listening?
Benjamin: Yes, I am.
Mr. McGuire: Plastics.
Benjamin: Just how do you mean that, sir?

That is the first thing I thought of as well.

When I think plastic,

I think that there has to be some way to replace petroleum based products. It has become the curse of our environment, from plastic bags caught in trees littering our country side to creating the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

Even worse is the recent revelation that Bisphenol A or BPA, the chemical that makes up plastic water bottles, baby bottles, water cooler bottles among others, could be causing developmental and neurological problems.

Thanks for the links, Mom

Many European countries have made great progress in tackling this issue. America remains stubbornly part of the problem, as we do in so many important areas.

Thanks for fixing my post

wish I could look at it to see what you did.

And Helms begat Reagan...

Arguably, Ronald Reagan's Helms enabled win in the 1976 NC primary was all the encouragement he needed to try again in 1980, setting the stage for the Reagan Revolution and synergistic escapades like this one...

TrueMeckDem on Myers Park Pat

"My opinion of Pat has changed over the years. I used to think he was truly a man of the people but the longer he has been mayor, the less I think of him.

As with most cities, Charlotte has three political parties: Dem, Rep, and Chamber of Commerce. Pat is definitely the puppet of the COC here. What is good for business is good for Charlotte and Pat ... very personable guy, he has gotten a bunch of Dems in these parts to vote for him but I don't trust him."
