UNCA students to confront Burr on campus
UNC-Asheville students are planning to confront Senator Richard Burr when he stops by their campus tomorrow, August 22, 2007.
Students are organizing through Facebook, of course, and telling each other to "Bring Your Tuition Bills" to Burr.
According to their Facebook group, student organizer Bradley Hardy says:
When the College Affordability Act came before the United States Senate Richard Burr not only voted against it, he did everything he could to derail the bill. Thank goodness the bill passed and will help millions of students across America afford college.
Now Richard Burr is coming to our campus to talk about faith-based initiatives. That's right--he voted against us but wants to use our campus to get votes.
Richard Burr decided that he would rather help out big banks than college students. Let's take our bills and text-book receipts to him tomorrow and ask him, "If you are my senator, why aren't you working for me?"
Oh boy... I'm hoping someone has a video camera. Some YouTube coverage of this will be great.

I'm betting the Asheville cops are out in full-force ready to smack down any rabblerousers who dare challenge the Burr Bushbot.
You never know, you could find a macaca moment
the more time someone spends in front of the camera, the more likely he or she will open mouth, insert foot.

I riffed on your earlier faith-based/Burr post over at ScruHoo, and a commenter opined that it's up to the legislative branch now to alter the FBO because the Bushies are going to stay the course. Defunding or otherwise altering the program would create a massive backlash from Big Religion, and there aren't any legislators willing to go to bat for either your argument - that government shouldn't be in the religion business at all - or my argument - that if government is in the religion business, then there had better be a fair shake for every religion from Zen Buddhism to Latter Day Saints.
I think I'll go by in the morning. Burr's supposed to be there to speak at 9. They'll likely get him there early to avoid any protesters, and I can't imagine the protestors being alive, alert, awake, enthusiastic at 8am. I'll be interested to see which faith based groups come to listen. I'd like to hear what kind of work they're doing.

Bradley was kind enough to write an account of the action:
