“Don't tell me what you value, show me your budget, and I'll tell you what you value.”
― Joe Biden
I've said it before and I'll say it again, I like filibuster reform.
While I'm extremely hesitant to support anything that takes away a check and balance of the minority on the majority, I think knowing that this is a process that has changed over time already, knowing that it wasn't a full nuclear option to eliminate the filibuster completely since it was limited just to executive and judicial appointees so that government can function, and knowing that it was after historic obstruction, I think if this step was ever justifiable, this is surely the time. Or even past time.
Even so, this makes the swing state US Senate seats around the country for 2014 all the more vital.
The Dems should have done this a long time ago. During "normal" periods of US history, the minority works as best they can with the majority, only using the filibuster on issues that are extraordinary and make an important point. The Republicans, led by the Tea Baggers, are way beyond this point, basically shutting down the government and trying to have their way at all costs.
If it comes back to haunt Democrats, so be it. It had to be done.
The 60 vote rule is at its core a good idea for certain applications. It restrains the majority in a practical way on major legislation, if used in moderation. That's a very big "if" though, and the evidence is clear that there is nothing resembling moderation in the Republican party.
Nearly half of all presidential nominations that have been blocked in the entire history of our nation have been blocked by the GOP during President Obama's term.
Agreed, that ain't exactly moderation.

After checking with the Guvnor's office, I have learned that the US Senate did NOT cut the amount of votes required to stop certain filibusters...
...they just compacted it!
