Wanted: 5000 North Carolinians to Educate the Council of State

(X-posted from Kleinschmidt2005)

Last week Judge Stephens finally pulled the brake on the runaway train that is NC's execution procedures. He pulled so hard the train jumped track and barrelled right into the living room of the members of the Council of State. Now the good folks over at the NC Coalition for a Moratorium are giving you a way to help the Honorable Council Members figure out how to solve this predicament. I learned about their efforts when this email came into my inbox a few minutes ago....

Dear Friends,

Last Thursday, when Superior Court Judge Donald Stephens imposed a temporary ban on executions, he effectively put NC back at the forefront of the national moratorium movement! The situation that has unfolded goes like this:

1. N.C. law says a physician must be present at all executions.
2. But the N.C. Medical Board prohibits physicians from participating in executions, saying doctors who do so violate the profession's ethics.
3. The Department of Correction subsequently modified its execution procedures drastically reducing the role of a doctor in the process; and the N.C. attorney general's office concurred saying doctors did not need to take part in executions but could just sign death certificates.
4. That, however, was not good enough for Wake County Superior Court Judge Donald Stephens who cited state law saying any change in the execution procedure had to be approved by the governor and the Council of State.

This leads me to the purpose of this letter. We have an opportunity to urge members of the Council of State not to endorse the current execution protocol. Approving the protocol will only result in a lengthy series of legal issues since a protocol that does not include a medical doctor is unconstitutional.

Here's what we'd like you to do NOW:

* Go to www.ncmoratorium.org

* Look to the right side of the page and click "Get Involved"
* Click "Tell the North Carolina Council of State to study the death penalty thoroughly and not to approve the current protocol for executions!"
* Read this page. You will find a listing of the members of the NC Council of State along with their mailing addresses, phone and fax numbers. Call each office and tell them not to approve the state's current method of execution.
* Scroll down a bit further and you'll see a section where you can send an email to every member of the Council of State. Follow the instructions given there. You can also forward the link to others urging them to email the Council members. (We are asking you to send email correspondence from the NCCM site so we can track how many emails are sent and forwarded to the Council members.)

If you have already responded to this charge forward the link to another individual and/or organization!

Thank you for your immediate attention to this very urgent message. With your help we will acheive our goal of 5,000 contacts to the Council of State!

Onwards,

Jeremy Collins, NC Coalition for a Moratorium

Done! That was easy!

Thanks for the invite to participate in a good cause.

Jim Long (Insurance Commissioner) responds to my email

Thank you for expressing your concerns about the Council of State having
to decide the issue of how executions are conducted in North Carolina.

The original language was put into North Carolina law in 1909 when the
state bought its first electric chair, and it has remained in the law
since then as the state went to the gas chamber and then to lethal
injection.

I am studying the legal aspects of this requirement under law and will
consider your thoughts in the process.

This issue has not been scheduled to be on the agenda of the Council of
State at this time.

Jim Long

Not sure what all that means, but at least it's on his radar.

I have met the guy. He is pretty old school. I dont know where he stands on this in particular, but I trust his judgement in general.

Jim Long

is the only council of state member who supported Jerry's election two years ago.

When I met him, he offered to work for free on my divorce (that he recommended right in front of my slightly inebriated husband). I guess that's a classic old school joke but I enjoyed it.

same response from Long

Yes. thanks for making this so easy.
Done and got one solitary response so far.

Here's Atkinson's response:

Thank you for your email regarding the issues of ethics and justice surrounding capital punishment specifically as it relates to protocol in North Carolina. Please be assured that I will carefully consider all of the issues brought before the Council of State concerning this extremely important issue.

I value your comments and appreciate your concern and input.

Sincerely,

June St. Clair Atkinson

Ha!

I got the exact same response.

I wonder why these people can't bring themselves to actually say what they think? Have they been hiding under rocks for the past ten years?

hahah

I was about to copy and paste the exact same thing. Did your email get sent at 1:45 also?

Draft Brad Miller -- NC Sen ActBlue :::Petition

Mine got sent at 1:58

Do you think they have an automated system or actually had to hand cut-and-paste each response individually?

not sure

I wonder whether they have a mailmerge type program for email or not. If not, I feel sorry for that intern or admin assistant

politial speak.

This is the ONE reason that I am so excited about John Edwards this year, if he REALLY avoids political speak, that is more than I could have ever asked for in a Presidential candidate.

Where are the candidates?

Office of Lt. Governor

wasted tax dollars sending me a letter via snail mail. Now, I like getting fancy letters with all that embossing and such....but sheeze louise, can't you just hit reply on my email and save the trees and the postage expense?

Enough bitching from me....heard from Perdue's office and she is giving it the proper consideration.

So, Long, Atkinson and Perdue have all responded.
