George Entenman, our frequent visitor and friend, has a most excellent and funny letter in today's News and Observer. Congratulations, George, and thanks for the mention.

Very clever.

So Rob Christensen, The N&O's political columnist, breaks his leg while on vacation in France but says absolutely nothing in his July 15 column about his medical care? He leaves his readers to wonder whether Michael Moore's "Sicko" is right about the French medical system.

Christensen doesn't say which leg he broke, but I'm beginning to think that the bloggers at BlueNC.com are on to something when they say Christensen leans to the right.

Campaign Mess: Public Financing Would Help Clean It Up

Go read the whole thing- it's excellent.

Lawmakers, current and former Council of State leaders, and thousands of North Carolinians believe it is a good idea because it gives candidates a chance to forgo the dreadful money chase in exchange for limited public money to run their campaigns. In exchange for participating, candidates waive their right to seek contributions from big donors and from political action committees (PACs).

If the General Assembly passes this pilot program, then in 2008 we will take a gigantic step toward cleaning up the campaign process. We will increase the number of qualified candidates willing to run, and interaction between them and the voters.

North Carolina has a history that recognizes the value of a government based on power- sharing and not powerful state executives. Public financing of campaigns is a voluntary method that helps ensure that this power-sharing continues.

Let's keep North Carolina elections voter-owned. We all win when the public knows our politicians are not beholden to powerful special interests, but beholden only to us.

Rob did email me to tell me that he hadn't known that his leg was broken until he got back to the U.S., so I assumed that they weren't going to print the letter. What a pleasant surprise to see it today!

Glad I could get a plug in for my great friends here at BlueNC!!
