Westboro Baptist idiots target Elizabeth Edwards
When hatred comes to town:
Westboro Baptist Church, a group with a history of staging protests at funerals and issuing anti-gay statements, is planning to picket the Saturday funeral of Elizabeth Edwards.
The group came into the national spotlight when members picketed the funeral of Matthew Shepard, a young man from Wyoming who was beaten to death by two men because of his homosexuality. Westboro has protested at the funerals of soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan
I was going to say, "Why don't they just go ahead and drink the Kool Aid?", but that would be in poor taste, so I'm not gonna go there.

Counter Protest?
Thoughts...
Let's create a wall of love & respect and render them invisible
Other towns and cities have done so with great success. All you need are about a hundred people with positive signs that honor and thank Elizabeth Edwards surrounding this group and blocking them in. No signs or chants responding to those crazies, please. We will get press, so it is important that we keep this postiive and uplifting and worthy of Elizabeth Edwards and all she stood for.
Resistance is Fertile
I'm there.
See you then? Noonish?
"They took all the trees and put them in a tree museum Then they charged the people a dollar 'n a half just to see 'em. Don't it always seem to go that you don't know what you've got till it's gone? They paved paradise and put up a parking lot."
Vigil Wall
not a counter protest. A vigil wall of protection for Elizabeth's loved ones. I will be there.
Even if it's just me and my one sign in front of them, I will be there.
My sign will say something like, "Let your light so shine before men." or "The greatest of these is Love." or "Grace" or "Mercy" or "Hope" or "Love" or "Light" or "Kindness" or "Holding you in the Light" or something like that ... I don't know yet.
But I will be there, come Hell or high water.

I'm not so sure a counter protest/demonstration
would be a good idea. Even a tasteful and silent gathering would still be viewed as "the other side" of an argument, when these idiots don't even deserve to be elevated to the level of having a "side".
I actually debated (with myself) if even posting this blog was a good idea, but it pissed me off enough that I felt compelled to. Which is probably exactly what they want. *sigh*
I think I agree, it is in a
I think I agree, it is in a way legitimizing their protest.
Although I'm still torn
about the idea of responding to these jackasses, here's a Facebook group (hat tip to Pam) with 300+ folks (so far) planning to show up at the funeral in support of Elizabeth and her family.
Not a counter demonstration, a tribute to Elizabeth Edwards
We do not want to be part of a circus. What I have in mind is not a counter demonstration but a tribute to Elizabeth Edwards. Responding to those nutjobs in any way, by sign or word, would give credence to their message, and this is the last thing we want to do. However, we do not want them to have even one second on TV. Only tasteful signs expressing our gratitude and admiration for this great lady should be displayed, and we would not engage the other group at all, just surround them and keep them out of sight.
The Edwards family has been offered an “Angel Honor Guard” and folks in Wake County are standing by to construct the wings. If they agree and you are interested in being part of the Angel Honor Guard or want to help make wings, let me know. We are also looking for Gospel Choirs to sing hymns to drown out the Westboro group and are contacting churches in the area.
I just found out that the City of Raleigh has ruled that no permit is necesary for either the Westboro group or us.
Rumors have it that Bill Clinton may attend, so security might be very tight.

Resistance is Fertile!
Love it...ands thanks for what you're doing.
I personally hope the Westboro group falls in front of a speeding bus.

Disorderly conduct at funerals.
FYI, the NC disorderly conduct statute 14‑288.4 specifically addresses funerals:
Perhaps the best "counter protest"...
How would these protesters respond if the Edwards children got out of the limousine and invited the protesters into the church to join them in worship?

Bringing American flags (not fags) to the occasion to block out the Westboro crazies.
Strife like this caused by people acting in the name of god is truly a perversion.
don't forget Elizabeth's response to hate speech
it was not to let it happen without comment.
She called Anne Coulter and politely read her the riot act.
