What to do about Joe the Bummer

Harry Reid has begun meetings with Joe Lieberman aimed at removing Joe from his high profile chair of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs. Joe is resisting and word is that senators-elect will get to vote on his fate. Let's give our new senator input on this.

Let's review the facts:

1. Barack Obama campaigned for Joe when he ran in his Democratic primary in 2006. That should get you some respect, no?

2. In 2008 Joe endorsed BO's opponent, addressed the Republican convention, actively campaigned for McCain and helped fuel the smears against BO. (In my humble opinion, this alone should be enough to cost Joe the chair of HSGA.)

3. While chair of HSGA Joe held NO hearings on the Bush Administration's detestable practices over the last few years while the comparable committee in the House held several. But, the drift in Joe's affections of late suggests that he can and will be all over BO's administration like a cheap suit. We simply cannot risk even a small chance of that happening. No doubt, BO will make some mistakes and will make decisions that need review from time to time; but this is no time to hamstring a team with a new vision for how to get us out of this incredible hole in which we find ourselves. We all learned how this works from the bogus non-stop investigations of the Clinton Days.

Letting Joe stay at HSGA is not an option; but Harry Reid points out that Joe votes with Democrats more often than several "real" Democrats, so there is a value in letting save face. My favorite suggestion so far is to offer Joe the Chair of Veterans Affairs. Think about the poetic justice of this: Joe will get to see up close and personal the results of the Iraqi War that he so wanted to happen. Joe will get to reach across the aisle to work with his Republican BFFs to fashion solutions for the personal messes they have created. And if he can't or won't handle that, there is always quality time by himself on the back bench, At least it would be the bench of the party that is taking a reality-based approach to governing.

Whatever your ideas on Joe's fate, now is the time to share them with Kay Hagan. Here is the contact address re: issues for the Hagan campaign:

"Only the most deluded of us could doubt the necessity of this war." - John McCain

At first I wanted Lieberman

At first I wanted Lieberman dumped awhile ago. I, however, don't believe that's wise. Joe gave Reid the majority he needed. If the Senate was 50-50 the Republicans would maintain the majority with 51-50 as Cheney would probably have to cast many tie breakers. Joe was our VP nominee in 2000, attempted a run in 2004 and has voted Democratically more than some Democratic members. With that said so what if Joe supported McCain and supports the war. This is America. While I supported Hillary/Obama and never supported the war, I don't hold those against him. He's done many things I praise him for. He introduced a bill in 2003 to grant DC two voting senators and representatives. He donated $200,000 to the DSCC and therefore indirectly helped Kay Hagan win against Dole. I mean us Democrats should be pretty open minded to other people with different views and realize not everyone in our party has to agree 100% of the time or have the same belief on a single issue.

Joe the Mumbler

My preference for the Mr Magoo of the Senate.

Lieberman is for Lieberman

When Democrats in Connecticut voted against him in the Primary, he decided to start his own party and got elected with a majority of Republican votes.

Democrats in the Senate allowed Lieberman to hold his committee chairmanships...and even campaigned to help him retain his seat, despite his new (I) status...because of the slim majority (really, tie) that we held in the Senate. We needed him, he needed us. But, when the votes were close and Republicans filibustered to block the Democratic agenda, Lieberman's vote certainly didn't "save us".

in 2008, when Lieberman could have shown his true loyalty to the Democratic party...including the party's nominee, who stepped up to help him win reelection to the Senate just 2 years ago...Lieberman went the other way. His loyalty was to himself...bashing the party he pretends to still be a member of, perhaps trying to win himself another shot at VP.

And now that Democrats have a clear majority, Lieberman is all "I always vote with you...don't revoke my chairmanship...it's Unacceptable!"

TFB, Joementum. You don't get to play both sides of the fence forever.

Congratulations, Congressman Kissell!

Joe should be in charge of picking up cigar butts

in the senate parking lot. Nothing more. He's a worthless tool.

This is more than having an open mind about issues.....

This is about someone who ran as VP for the Dem party, and has been a chairman of a pretty influential committee, so has a big voice on the issues. He has chosen to be an advocate for what is pretty well documented 'illegal' war. In my opinion, he acts more like a foreign agent for a country that won't be losing their soldiers for their cause. If he is stripped of any connection to the Dems, so what? If he votes against them in spite, the Conn. voters will dispose of him in 2012.(?)Out with the trash!

We're big tent dems and Joe should have a place

He should be removed as chair of homeland security though. Many have said the same and I agree, but he should not be kicked off the Dem caucus and he should be offered a chairmanship that compliments his strengths. Although the repubs would like him to join them openly, they can't offer him chairs of any committees and until Connecticut elects another Democratic Senator, he's still on our side. (Most of the time)

Obama said the same yesterday and the more I think about what he said, the more I agree. He could possibly be used to negotiate votes with Repubs because they trust him.

No matter that patriotism is too often the refuge of scoundrels. Dissent, rebellion, and all-around hell-raising remain the true duty of patriots.

Not enough chairmanships to go around

He should not have a chairmanship. There really aren't enough to go around to all who do deserve them. I agree he should not be kicked out of the caucus, but we shouldn't bar the door if he threatens to leave. Let him go. This isn't a game and Lieberman needs to stop acting like it is.

I wouldn't mind if he got this subcommitteeship.

Subcommittee on Rural Revitalization, Conservation, Forestry and Credit Jurisdiction.

Debbie Stabenow could move up to something more important and Joe could focus on the trees.

"You could say, 'Look, is this guy, Laden, really the bad guy that's depicted?' Most of us have never heard of him before." John McCain, following Clinton's strikes on al Qaeda camps

Jesus Swept ticked me off. Too short. I loved the characters and then POOF it was over.

rural revitalization

is far too important to hand off to Joementum. Why don't we just let him sit on a few committees and call it a day.
