The short answer is "I'm not sure." I mean, I'm sure that the site was crippled due to a database problem, and I'm sure that it was down throughout the night. But at this point I'm not sure whether the problem was a freak glitch or the work of a malicious operator. I'm working with our host to pull SQL and access logs to determine what happened.
In the meantime, here are a couple of things to know:
- The site is running on a backup of our database. Anything entered (comments, blog posts, whatever) after this backup was made have been lost. This was unavoidable.
- We will be moving this weekend to a more secure environment, which means that there will be another database backup restore. If you post anything over the next couple of days that you don't want to risk losing, make a copy (say, in a txt file) on your local machine.
Blogs are big political business now,and the level of security that made sense at BlueNC's inception no longer seems sufficient. I apologize for the inconvenience caused last night, and for any that results from our upcoming move.
