What's up with Edwards Press Event Thursday in Chapel Hill

Surprised the BlueNC'rs aren't on to this yet...

Presidential candidate John Edwards and his wife, Elizabeth, have scheduled a press conference Thursday at noon in Chapel Hill.

The campaign would not say what they would discuss, but observers have been awaiting an update on Elizabeth Edwards' latest breast cancer checkup.

I hope Elizabeth is doing well and this is just a quick update to quell any concerns.

Just linked to a story that John was able to attend a barbecue (fundraiser?) tonight, even though his appearance in Iowa was cancelled. So that could be good news. Or it could be before the bad news was received.

I hate all the speculation. Going to be a long 12 hours.

I posted this in the comments portion of the Open Thread. Thanks for making it into its own post--it deserves everyone's attention.

I'll pray tonight for Elizabeth and her family.

From the NY Times

The Times just posted a story about the press conference.

Here's an excerpt--it's not good news:

Mr. Edwards canceled an appearance in Iowa on Wednesday, so he could go to a follow-up doctor’s appointment with his wife. Early in the day, associates of Mr. Edwards said they had no reason to believe the check-up was anything to worry about, but late Wednesday evening two friends said they believed the news was bad.

After the campaign announced its intention to hold a press conference on Thursday in North Carolina, concern quickly among former and current aides to the Edwards family. One close family friend reached Wednesday evening declined to comment on the announcement, but said it would affect at least temporarily the future of the campaign.

Other supporters and friends contacted said they were unaware of the scope of the announcement. A leading contributor to the campaign, speaking on condition of anonymity, said organizers had not been notified to cancel a long string of events scheduled before the end of March, the deadline for the first-quarter financial reports.

I think...

it will be "not great" news, but have read not to assume "the worst".

What media outlets

will carry the news conference live?

I don't know, but I'll be live-blogging it.

I would hope WUNC will carry it.

Wow, this is sad, whatever is happening

As a person who lives with a chronic illness (I'm currently in remission myself after a three-year battle to get there), I am praying for Elizabeth Edwards' health right now. That is first and foremost in my mind. Every time you come out of remission and back into active disease mode, it turns your life upside down.
I also want to say that America needs Edwards in this debate, whether he's elected or not. Robert P is right---he is definitely pushing the parameters of the debate right now in almost all the directions we party activists would like to see them go.
But America also needs men and women who love their husbands, wives, and partners more than anything. That, to me, is perhaps the most attractive thing about John Edwards as a leader and as a human being.

directed at this amazing woman and the Edward's family. Please let it not be tragic news.

It's a tough one. I saw

It's a tough one. I saw Elizabeth is action at the recent ConvergeSouth 'blog meetup. Definitely understood why folks think she's the better half of an Edward's Presidency ;-)

I'm over at Carrboro's Weaver St. Market. Heard conversations and expressions of concern in near realtime with the announcement. Local folks, whether they support an Edwards candidacy or not, seem to have taken a real shine to Elizabeth.

I can see why.

I've been out all day

Just saw the tape on CNN. You certainly wouldn't know the disease is terminal from watching John and Elizabeth. The surgeon they had in for an interview said Elizabeth is approaching this the right way and he wasn't in the least negative. That was nice to see/hear.

Robin Hayes lied. Nobody died, but thousands of folks lost their jobs.
