Where I've been..
I've been a little dodgy and haven't participated lately. I apologize, but it's been for a good cause, I promise.
Several days after the election, I took a big step in my role as a Progressive and activist within Onslow County: I registered as a Democrat.
As a Democrat, I thought I should attend a recent meeting of the Onslow County Democratic party (which I did). I was by far the youngest person in the room (the next youngest was a fellow in his mid-to-upper 30s). I was appointed to do several things...Among these are recruit young members to the Democratic Party, get these young members to become active in the Party and charter a Young Democrats group.
Any advice given will be greatly appreciated.

Hey Thomas
Thanks for letting us know you're okay. It looks like the OCDP folks were happy to get some fresh meat onboard!
I wish I had good advice on the assignments, but as a crotchety old man, I am clueless when it comes to inspiring young people to get engaged. The only idea that really comes to mind is to have some kind of event with a little bit of "star" power that might pull young people into the mix.
There's a certain ex-Senator from NC who is likely running for President who will need to talk with and hear from folks in and around the armed services. Maybe you could get him to visit Jacksonville as part of his One America activities. Lord knows Marine families have suffered more than their fair share of abuse and mistreatment at the hands of the Party of Torture and Greed. And if there were a list of towns that symbolize "Two Americas" ... Jacksonville would be on it.
young dems...
attract them with social events, but keep them with purposeful opportunities.
Have your regular meetings someplace (like a bar!) where you can eat, drink and mingle but make sure you have a purposeful agenda and connect your members to the party, local officials and candidates so they can volunteer/organize/serve.
It has to be fun and meaningful.

Consider speaking with young professionals
Lawyers, accountants, etc. You may hit a few rebuffs before getting a hit, but probably these people will be the kind to get motivated and involved, and each will come with a book of contacts.
...and groups like
Planned Parenthood Young Professionals, Drinking Liberally (if you've got one!), college dems (they graduate and become young dems)...etc, etc.

great ideas.
