Who's afraid of Liddy Dole?

Apparently everyone.

I continue to be distressed that no suitable Democrat has stepped up to challenge Liddy Dole for the US Senate. I won't highlight the names right now, but it's a crying shame that so many good potential candidates have failed so far to rise to the occasion.

What I really don't understand, though, is what they're afraid of. A serial incompetent who has done nothing of note in her entire career? A cheer-leading Bushbot chickenhawk who believes in staying the disastrous course in Iraq? An old-school politician who puts party over country at every turn?

More to the point, we're now getting a few rare glimpses of the very senior Senator in person (she is conducting a statewide dog-and-pony show to shore up her anti-immigrant credentials with the xenophobic fringe) - and it ain't a pretty sight. Just look at what the woman has to say!

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Senator Elizabeth Dole's tour of the state came through Salisbury on Wednesday and she spent her time talking to local leaders about immigration reform.
Sheriffs from across the Charlotte area met with Dole at the Rowan County Sheriff's Office and told her their concerns about immigration.

The senator said she's pushing for legislation to secure our borders and enforce laws already on the books. "It's how you weed out the criminal element here. In other words, we want to enforce the law because there's no real system," she said.

Dole said she's working on legislation that would allow sheriff's offices to access a federal database that lists illegal immigrants. She said the biggest problem is funding for training.

Is this a screwed up transcript from a television station, or did Biddy actually say we need new legislation to enforce laws already on the books? How stupid is that? And is funding for training really the biggest problem we're facing related to immigration? I would have thought it would be unscrupulous employers profiting from the slave wages they pay illegal workers.

If no one else steps up to challenge Senator Dole, I'll probably do it myself.

As a back-sliding Baptist with an over-heated record of online outrage, I doubt I can win the hearts and minds of mainstream North Carolina. But somebody's gotta try. And you just never know what might happen. The way things are degenerating, Senator Dole might very well be completely incoherent a year from now . . . just in time for our big debate.

More like a babbling idiot at a flea market sale when she is one of the items on sale as a historial site. Help may be on the way without the Democrat establishment dicking around with this race. To beat Liddy it is going to take a former republican who takes no prisoners......

And who would that be?

You! I was thinking about taking those 6 Liddy wigs and putting you in a pink dress and than change your party reg for one day and than switch it again to Demo where you will claim that you were dupe by the Republicans since they have become the party of Preverts in secret. What is your dress size and have you model before?

You got me, Max

I've totally repressed that I actually used to be a Republican. How funny is that? Seems like a whole nother life ago, which I suppose it was.

I'm 3X in the dress department - and lord knows I could use a wig to keep my shiny bald head from blinding the cameras!

And yes, I have modeled before . . . model trains.

:)

I think she's already incoherent,

"In other words, we want to enforce the law because there's no real system," she said.

What does that even mean? Yeah I know justice is gone, gone, Gonzales, but that statement doesn't even make sense on the face of it.

Are they smoking something up there in DC? Mel Watt just sent me the most incomprehensible reply to my latest impeachment request it begs the question, has Bush started doping them all?

Have you called to support H. Res 333 Impeach Cheney Today? call 202-224-3121 & ask for your Congress member by name

No kidding

What does that even mean . . . is right. I thought it had to be a mis-quote, but then I thought again: It sounds like vintage Liddy.

Thanks, Mr. P.

I won't hold you to it, but it's really great to have my first endorsement!

Hey,

I'll vote for you too even tho' you used to be a republican. Everybody has a few skeletons.

Go for it, you have my vote!

Former Lt. Governor Dennis Wicker?

In my travels around North Carolina as of late conducting regional town meetings, and as recently as today from a long time friend of mine here in Raleigh, I have heard folks declare that the NC Democratic Party should do its best to persuade former Lt. Governor Dennis Wicker to seek the post. ... After all, he served North Carolina superbly as Majority Leader in the NC House and then 8 years as Lt. Governor. Dennis Wicker is well-known Statewide, has many members from his 2000 team for Governor still active in State politics, and is well-connected - not to mention smart, energetic, scrappy, and able to tackle anything the Repubs send his way.

Not having spoken with him in awhile, I don't know if he is interested in a 2008 run but he'd make one heckuva candidate and a fantastic U.S. Senator.

Other Democrats who have been proposed by "The Great Mentioner" - whomever that is, but the person in the political ether who starts the process of naming names that have come up - would all be perfect replacements for Liddy Dole as well.

Your thoughts about Wicker? Other candidates?

I've had a generally positive opinion of Wicker

but don't know much more than that.

I still like Roy Cooper, but I can understand him sitting tight until he has the chance to run against Burr with two years still to go as AG.

Wretched gubernatorial candidate, but I'll take him

(Late to the dance here...)

He was horrible in his campaign for the Democratic primary against Easley. That said, it's getting very late for an unknown to jump into the process. Wicker has ties to the Hunt machine, so he's got the kind of cred with the statewide party he needs to get up and running in a hurry.

At this point, I'll take any halfway decent Democrat. Charles Meeker! Terry Sanford Jr.! Mel Watt! Jim Hunt! Rufus Edmiston! SOMEBODY!!!!

Perfect Senate Candidate...

How about Barbara Goodman? She's rich, progressive (runs the A.J. Fletcher Foundation), well-known (her and her husband Jim, president of WRAL, were chosen Tar Heels of the Year by the N&O a few years back), a new face to politics and passionate about the issues.

And Wayne-- I think WE are the "Great Mentioner". My, how times have changed.

Republicans

but they do support some Dems that I know.

Robert P.'s picture

I think I looked up their FEC donations once.

If memory serves, they actually seem to donate fairly widely to politicians.

As unconstitutional as it seems ...

I'm wondering how I would do against Liddy in a PPP poll ...

I dont' know about versus Liddy...

but for Lt. Governor I'll bet you polled at 6-9% - just like everyone else.

And Helms begat Reagan...

Arguably, Ronald Reagan's Helms enabled win in the 1976 NC primary was all the encouragement he needed to try again in 1980, setting the stage for the Reagan Revolution and synergistic escapades like this one...

TrueMeckDem on Myers Park Pat

"My opinion of Pat has changed over the years. I used to think he was truly a man of the people but the longer he has been mayor, the less I think of him.

As with most cities, Charlotte has three political parties: Dem, Rep, and Chamber of Commerce. Pat is definitely the puppet of the COC here. What is good for business is good for Charlotte and Pat ... very personable guy, he has gotten a bunch of Dems in these parts to vote for him but I don't trust him."
