Higgs-Bosun Particle confirmed

The most important discovery in particle physics in a very long time was announced this am...the Higgs Bosun particle...which gives mass to everything in our universe. How this will affect our lives, I'm not sure, but it will because it's discovery verifies scientific explanations for a lot of what scientists think goes on in the cosmos. Wanna learn more...google it. Anyway, in related speculation, I'm sure the North Carolina Legislature will outlaw it since it's not in the bible or the GOP political platform....and such particles definitely will not be allowed to marry.

We live in a state with a legislature controlled by mostly brain-dead bigots.

Here's some framing

Americans like to think of themselves as hardy, independent, self-reliant patriots and citizens. Some politicians cater to these notions and campaign on promises of reducing taxes, promoting individual liberty, and freeing the citizenry of the burdens of supporting the less responsible,or perhaps simply lazy, with tax dollars spent on social welfare programs...say like Social Security and Medicare and Medicaid. Just think what you could do with a 7.5% (SS tax) and 1.5% (Medicare tax) increase in take home pay. And employers would have more money too...surely to be spent on higher salaries and/or more jobs. Right?

Why is this happening...

Several days ago I posted a question here about why people seem to be voting against their own interests. James commented that he thought it was fear and some others weighed in with other suggestions...one of which was to read some of George Lakoff's books. Then a day or so ago someone on Kos put up a short diary stating simply a quote from Isaac Asimov::

“Anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that 'my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge.'” ... which the diarist seemed to think is an explanation for what's happening. i.e., those other folks are ignorant.

Why are we doing this to ourselves?

There are a lot of smart people here and I'm hoping someone can tell me why so many elderly, middle class, and/or others seem to be embracing right-wing drivel and voting against their own self interests. More importantly, I'm hoping someone can suggest what message we could employ to turn this around.

I'm astounded and stupefied by it all. How can we allow the Fair Pay Act to be rejected and not be going nuts? How can we allow legislation permitting the government to use propaganda against it's own citizens, or cut taxes for the wealthy at the expense of Social Security ... and behave as if all that is just fine?

I hope someone can think of an answer we can use to communicate with those who seem so oblivious. HELP!

If you have time to read, you have time to

make a very important call to each of our addle-brained conniving Senators who will soon (perhaps today or tomorrow) be voting on THREE very important issues:

They are:

The Paycheck Fairness Act which would update the 50 year old Equal Pay Act to provide equal pay to women...who generally earn only about 77% of what men make for doing the same work. Support this legislation.

Tell them to oppose the Liebermann-Collins cyber security bill because it will violate American's on-line privacy...

The Wilmington Star News slammed Tillis this morning.

The opening words were:

Such a stand-up guy, that Thom Tillis. Two top aides who embarrassed the House speaker and reminded us that pay-to-play politics is a bipartisan institution were rewarded with an extra month of salary after they were forced to resign as a result of affairs with lobbyists.

That's right, while ex-U.S. Sen. John Edwards' lawyers were busy defending the onetime presidential hopeful against charges of using campaign money to cover up an extramarital affair that produced a daughter, Tillis, R-Mecklenburg, awarded his two staffers $19,000 in taxpayer money because, well, he's just a great big softie.

Talking more about poor use of taxes in NC...The $25 BILLION Mortgage Settlement Fund

You might recall that Federal and state officials reached a $25 billion settlement with five big banks in February over abuses in their mortgage and foreclosure processes. A report from Enterprise Community Partners, a national affordable housing group, has found that many states are diverting the money to other purposes. The NY Times reported yesterday on how those monies are being spent. North Carolina received $60+ Million dollars...supposedly to be spent to provide mortgage relief to the affected homeowners. Well....guess what...along with a lot of other states this money isn't going where it would do the most good in NC. Some of it is being diverted into the General Fund to be pissed away..and a lot more (in NC) is going to be spent doing things that will likely accomplish nothing.

Let's talk about taxes...

I'm starting to go over to the dark side on taxes. Yes, I think taxes are the price we pay for a civilized society. Yes, I think a progressive tax structure is appropriate and the very wealthy should pay a bit more... But, I'm finally getting fed up. First, I'm fed up because our tax code is not equitable...and generally speaking it favors the wealthy with many loopholes and the lower rate on capital gains than the rates on sweat-earned wages. And, most of the many OTHER taxes also impact the poor and middle class more than the rich.
