Invest in the future, invest in education.

Our current state leadership projects a revenue surplus for the coming year. Yet they are asking all state agencies to show a 2% cut in their proposed budgets for the next legislative session.

School officials say a late August memo from Gov. Pat McCrory’s chief budget officer signals that all state departments, including the public schools, must soon present options for a 2 percent cut in their 2017-2019 budget, roughly a $173 million loss for North Carolina schools.

Early Vote Plans

You may want to wait till it's late at night and you can't sleep to read this one. Although it does supply some insight into the people of North Carolina!

As a Democrat, I can’t say enough good things about Josh Malcolm, one of the two Dem reps on the State Board Of Elections.(SBOE)

Marathon State Board of Elections Meeting

A few comments regarding the marathon meeting of the NC State Board of Elections held Thursday, all day and into the night.

Issue #1. There are 33 counties in need of having the state board adjudicate their plans for early-vote hours. One can reasonably expect at least 1, and possibly, 3 persons from each county would attend-- maybe 4, if one also counts the local county director of elections. The general pubic is invited to attend and a number of NC BOE staff members will be present.

'Get 'em out!'

Trump's promise to 'remove' the undocumented within 1 hour of being sworn into office would probably require the activation of every police officer, national Guard unit, and all the military. Every plane & bus would have to be commandeered to provide transportation, gas for these vehicles arranged, food, housing and medical attention for both troops and prisoners provided for whatever period of time was actually required to move people around.

AARP backs out of ALEC

Some of you know I was recently informed that the AARP had helped sponsor the recent ALEC conference in Indianapolis. I immediately went to their Facebook page and sent them a message expressing my disappointment. Today, I received the following message:

#HeroicBathroomWarrior

Here are 2, Thursday afternoon news items:

The NBA has pulled the All Star Game out of Charlotte, taking lots and lots of dollar$$$ with it.

and

Twitter is referring to our governor as #HeroicBathroomWarrior.

This is what happens when government gets involved with people's bathroom habits.

Open Carry Creates Chaos

In January, 2016, it became legal to openly carry firearms in Texas. North Carolina can learn from what happened at the Dallas rally last week, where 20-30 individuals showed up with firearms slung across their backs. When gunfire broke out, wounding or killing 11 of those present at the peaceful rally, confusion reigned. Two men with firearms (and a woman who was with them) were detained, creating the rumor there was more than one gunman.

This is One Wall That Needs Re-Building

The Wall of Separation Between Church and State has had some holes punched in it over the past few years by those wanting everyone to believe, erroneously, that the US is some kind of 'Christian nation.' When we think about it, we all know that the only way that I can be free to follow my own religious beliefs is to allow you to be free to follow your's. And the only way that can be accomplished is if no one group's tenets of faith are enacted as the law of the land.
