FOREST CONTINUES TO DODGE MEDIA QUESTIONS ABOUT HOW HE WOULD PROTECT ELDERLY FROM VIRUS: The lieutenant governor hasn’t released a plan, and he wouldn’t respond to WRAL News' questions about it this week. He hasn’t reached out to advocacy groups that work in that space, including the North Carolina Assisted Living Association, the North Carolina Senior Living Association, the AARP and Friends of Residents in Long Term Care, which advocates for people in nursing homes and assisted living facilities. As for Forest’s plans, his campaign website gives more information about his plan to improve coastal fishing than his promise to protect senior citizens. Forest said on the radio show that protecting the vulnerable is "not that difficult to do," but "we’re not being told the truth." He also complained about being asked for his pandemic response plan. “The media wants to come back now, now that we’re two weeks away, and say, 'Well, what would Dan Forest do to protect nursing homes?'" he said. "Why don’t you ask Gov. Cooper what Gov. Cooper would do to protect nursing homes, because he’s not doing it? That’s the story. He’s the governor. The weight falls on his shoulders while he’s the governor.”

RACIST KANNAPOLIS TEENAGER WENT TO DELAWARE TO KILL JOE BIDEN: What Treisman had in mind was unclear. But federal investigators later found an online post on iFunny in which Treisman posed a question and may have offered a clue: “Should I kill Joe Biden?” Treisman, according to court records, told investigators that his violent posts were not real and only part of his online persona. But investigators with the FBI office in Charlotte who tracked Treisman’s credit cards and cell phone were able to place him at a Wendy’s only four miles from the former vice president’s Delaware home on May 3. Treisman, also known as Alexander Theiss, was arrested May 27 after Kannapolis police searched his abandoned van outside a Main Street bank that included firearms, explosive material and $509,000 in cash, which was believed to be Treisman’s family inheritance, court records show. The cache of weapons included a Sig Sauer AR rifle, an Intratec 9mm Luger, a Lower AR receiver, a Kel-Tec Sub-2000, a .22 caliber rifle marked ArchAngel, and a Russian Mosin Nagant M91/30 bolt action rifle, according to the affidavit.

MARK ROBINSON IS EVEN CRAZIER THAN YOU THOUGHT: The Republican candidate for lieutenant governor voiced agreement with a religious leader who says that the “Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse” are the Rothschild family of “international bankers that rule every single ... central bank,” the CIA, China and Islam. The conversation is part of an interview that Mark Robinson did in 2019 with Pastor Sean Moon, whose father Sun Myung Moon founded the Unification Church, which some have called a cult. Sean Moon’s Pennsylvania-based church believes that the American government will collapse and that he will ultimately become king of the United States, according to a 2018 Washington Post profile. Robinson’s campaign has already faced criticism for Facebook posts in which he makes derogatory comments about transgender people, Muslims, a Jewish filmmaker, former President Barack Obama and fellow Black Americans who support Democrats. But the Greensboro gun-rights activist voices other controversial views in the interview with Moon, which was posted to YouTube and features the pastor wearing camouflage and a crown made of rifle shells. He criticized The News & Observer for writing about the video. “This video has under 300 views, and was posted over a year ago. This is clearly the fake news media trying to destroy not only a conservative, but a Christian just two weeks before an election.”

TRUMP AND BIDEN ARE POLAR OPPOSITES ON THREAT OF CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC: Of all the disagreements between the two candidates, none blazed more brightly than their assessments of the American experience battling the coronavirus. Prompted by the moderator, Kristen Welker of NBC News, to explain his plan for the coming months, Mr. Trump stuck to the sunny message he has delivered at recent campaign rallies, promising a vaccine in short order and citing his own recovery from a bout with the virus as an example of medical progress. “I’ve been congratulated by the heads of many countries on what we’ve been able to do,” Mr. Trump said, without offering any specifics. Mr. Biden, in response, pressed a focused and familiar line of attack against the president, faulting him for doing “virtually nothing” to head off the pandemic early this year and heading into the coldest part of the year with no defined plan to control the virus. Holding up a face mask, Mr. Biden said he would encourage all Americans to don them and would ramp up rapid testing on a national scale. “We’re about to go into a dark winter, a dark winter, and he has no clear plan,” Mr. Biden said. Mr. Trump shot back: “I don’t think we’re going to have a dark winter at all — we’re opening up our country.” But when the president said “we’re learning to live with” the coronavirus, Mr. Biden pounced. “We’re learning to die with it,” he said. Mr. Biden’s strongest moment may have been when he looked into the camera and knowingly addressed voters. “You know who he is,” he said, alluding to Mr. Trump. “You know his character. You know my character. You know our reputations for honor and telling the truth.”

BARRETT NOMINATION MOVES FROM COMMITTEE TO THE FULL SENATE: The full US Senate will begin debating whether to add Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the United States Supreme Court on Friday, ahead of a vote scheduled Monday that is expected to fall along party lines, with the Republican members having the majority to confirm her. Republicans in the United States Senate jammed the nomination of Barrett through a key committee Thursday, setting the stage for her confirmation to the Supreme Court on October 26. In a meeting boycotted by Democrats, the Senate Judiciary Committee voted 12 “yeas” – with 10 members marked “not present” – to recommend Barrett’s confirmation favourably to the full Senate. “We are boycotting this illegitimate hearing,” Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said at a news conference at the US Capitol. “The Senate Republican majority is conducting the most rushed, most partisan, and least legitimate confirmation in the history of our county,” Schumer said. “Democrats will not lend a single ounce of legitimacy to this sham vote,” he said, calling the Republican process a “mad rush to jam through a Supreme Court nomination just days before an election.” The empty chairs of Democratic members of the Judiciary Committee on Thursday were filled with large photos of constituents who would lose access to medicines and care if the ACA is overturned. Longer-term, Barrett is seen likely to rule in favour of state legislatures’ attempts to curtail women’s access to reproductive care including the right to an abortion enshrined in the 1973 Roe v Wade Supreme Court ruling.

Ten days and a wake-up

This is one of the biggest tests of our democracy America has ever faced, and I sure as hell hope we pass that test. Because if we don't, I'm not sure we'll ever recover.
