Exodus International in NC

As you may have heard, the main organization pushing Gay "conversion" therapy, Exodus International, is shutting down. The head of the group has made a public apology for the organization's work, which has been going on since 1976. Gay conversion therapy has been debunked by several organizations, including the American Medical Association and the American Psychological Association, and has been linked to causing or encouraging depression, PTSD and suicide.

Some churches affiliated with Exodus may continue to offer "ex-gay" therapy, even though Exodus itself is shutting down. Gay conversion therapy is illegal in some areas.

Here's a list of Exodus affiliates in North Carolina. I'd encourage the press in NC to follow up with these individual churches when the dust settles from the Exodus announcement to see if they're still offering dangerous this dangerous quack therapy and how they can defend it. It's also worth investigating if they actively campaigned for the passage of Amendment One.

Thanks for posting this

It's a big story. Maybe one of our BlueNC community members would like to follow up with the churches to see where they stand now.

I contacted Beyond Imagination

Asking for an interview. The owner there was polite but extremely cautious, wanting a full list of any questions I might ask before agreeing to talk.

I decided the terms were unacceptable, but did get an email response to one

Question: The head of Exodus International has made a public apology for the organization's work, which has been going on since 1976. As an affiliated organization, how does that announcement affect your plans and programs?

Answer:
We're not affected, we're moving forward (that's basically my answer).

Not surprising. When you're a true-believer who purports to speak for god, there's no room for reflection or humility. And if the national organization you're affiliated with comes clean about the destructive nature of their programs, well ... nothing to see here. Move along.

In my campaign for governor, I'm hearing from lots of people who believe they speak for God. It's weird. The god they're speaking for seems to be a bigoted jerk.

What we really need is

What we really need is "Religious Conversion Therapy" that is at least possible if you catch the disease before fundamentalism sets in.
Just imagine how much more kind, decent and understanding the entire world would be without fundamentalist religion in it.
ALL Terrorist Org and ALL Hate Groups would vanish as there would be nothing left to fuel the hatred.
