While we’ve not seen a lot of Heath Shuler coverage on this side of the Balsam Mountain Range, over in the hinterlands of the west, Shuler’s been getting great coverage from the Cherokee Sentinel. In two articles, Shuler takes on two of Charles Taylor's latest failures:
Taylor lets down forest funding, Shuler says – “Heath Shuler, candidate for Congress in North Carolina's 11th District, called on Charles Taylor to explain to the hunters, fishers, hikers, and families of western North Carolina why he allowed funding for the Land and Water Conservation Fund to be eliminated and other important forest service programs slashed.
"Charles Taylor has consistently put the interests of his lobbyist and special interest friends ahead of the interests of the people of this district," said Shuler. "We are blessed to live in one of the most beautiful places in America, yet our representative refuses to help keep it that way. The elimination of millions of dollars for important forest service programs is another in his long line of failures for our national forests and lands."
Taylor, who chairs the committee which oversees funding for the Interior Department, allowed millions of dollars to be slashed from important forest service programs, including a complete elimination of funding for the Land and Water Conservation Fund.
"Whether watching the Blue Ridge Parkway deteriorate or his absence in the fight against the sale of our national forest land, Charles Taylor has failed the people of Western North Carolina," Shuler continued.
"We need to make fiscally responsible decisions in Congress. I firmly believe securing our forest lands, protecting our lands and waters, and providing recreational opportunities for our families are more important than building bridges and roads to nowhere."
Taylor has supported spending $500 and $600 million respectively to build the "Bridge to Nowhere" in Alaska and the "Road to Nowhere" in the 11th District's Great Smoky Mountains.”
Shuler says Taylor votes against anti-child pornography funding - Waynesville, NC Heath Shuler, candidate for Congress in North Carolina's 11th District, today criticized Representative Charles Taylor's recent vote against additional funding for the fight against child pornography and internet sexual predators.
"As a parent, I am shocked that Charles Taylor would stand up and vote against providing needed additional resources to protect our children and our communities," said Shuler. "Our communities are not immune from this threat, and we must be doing everything in our power to protect our children. Governing is about setting priorities, and our children's safety must be a priority."
Taylor's vote was against providing $5 million in additional funding for the Cyber Crimes Unit of the Department of Homeland Security's Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to fight sexual predators and child pornography.
“"Protecting our children is not a Democratic or Republican issue, and you can see that through the broad bipartisan support this amendment received," Shuler continued. "The people of western North Carolina need a representative in Congress who will stand up for the safety of our communities and our children."
Charles Taylor pretends to bring home the bacon for the eleventh district despite the fact that he is one of the least effective members of the Appropriations committee. He pretends to be a fiscal conservative when our tax dollars are being spent on other districts’ projects like the Alaska Bridge to Nowhere while the National Debt has skyrocketed under Taylor’s tenure. Meanwhile, Taylor chooses to cut programs like the Cyber Crimes Unit. When you paid your taxes this year, did you intend those dollars to pay for outrageous programs like the Bridge to Nowhere, or did you intend those dollars to pay for the health and well-being of your nation and your children?
Anyone remember when Charles Taylor accused Patsy Keever of "Putting Pornography Over Our Children?" The hypocrisy is dizzying, but don't expect Taylor to come out explaining how many children will be preyed upon in order to take $5 million out of fighting internet sexual predators only to have him put it into his pet projects like the unwanted North Shore Road. Taylor's slashing the budgets of our most important resources and putting his fiscally irresponsible votes towards outlandish pork projects instead.
Charles Taylor has a record of failure and an agenda that doesn’t include protecting our children from environmental hazards or sexual predators. Hats off to Heath Shuler and Cherokee Sentinel for having the courage and insight to inform western North Carolina of Taylor’s latest misdeeds.
