I don't envy my friends who are teachers

Dear teachers,

After years of toiling out of the spotlight, you've been cast to center stage, with everyone and her sister giving you advice about doing your jobs and navigating the political waters. I personally have been inspired and moved by your collective actions in the face of relentless GOP assaults over the past year.

As I think about the challenges ahead, I don't envy you. You're being asked to sacrifice teaching assistants, textbooks, and facilities ... and to surrender what small amount of job security you currently have.

In short, you are being divided and conquered, played one against the other, with callous disregard for your work, your passions, and your prosperity. You are pawns in a Republican game, pure and simple.

If you choose to play along with the GOP Plan of Destruction, you can be sure you will not end up in a better place, either in the short term or the long term. That Plan of Destruction includes decimating your profession, forcing you to denounce science in the classroom, and watching for-profit interests chip away at the very foundation of your career. If you choose to play along with the GOP Plan of Destruction, you will be hastening the end of public education in North Carolina, our state's most valuable public institution.

If I were a teacher

I'd tell Phil Berger to go phuck himself.

Found this on Facebook from the NC General Statutes:

Any person who threatens or communicates a threat or threats to another with the intention thereby wrongfully to obtain anything of value or any acquittance, advantage, or immunity is guilty of extortion and such person shall be punished as a Class F felon. (1973, c. 1032; 1979, c. 760, s. 5; 1979, 2nd Sess., c. 1316, s. 47; 1981, c. 63, s. 1, c. 179, s. 14; 1993, c. 539, s. 1184; 1994, Ex. Sess., c. 24, s. 14(c).)

That's what the General Assembly is doing right now to teachers.

It's not pretty in the educational trenches

these days. Those NC GOP-ers and their ALEC masters don't give a shit about education, teachers or children. They also don't care about the future as they condemn the coming generations to a thirsty life of hardship and ignorance.
Thank you for caring. If any teacher, or anyone who gives the first damn about Education ever votes for a republican in NC then they need their head examined ... and maybe a stiff slap.

I actively oppose gerrymandering. Do you?

From a debate on Facebook

It looks like a whole lot of demoralized teachers will consider taking the money for this year and looking for new jobs next year.

On other fronts, there is serious discussion by some about challenging the new law as extortion.

Meanwhile, judging from the growing level of outrage, I wouldn't be surprised if someone goes postal and Phil Berger forgets to wake up one morning.

is what it is.

Didn't courts already rule that the state couldn't require teachers to give up career status to get pay (previously it was the $500 bonus)? If we recall correctly, the rulings were limited to some particular counties/school systems that chose to sue -- but the courts did rule this illegal, right?
