I just filed to run for the Board of Aldermen in Gibsonville

Something I've been threatening to do for at least ten years, and finally ran out of decent excuses. And I am fairly certain some of you reading this have struggled with this decision yourselves, and may be doing so right this moment. Is it worth the hassle? What if I don't win? Even scarier maybe, what if I do win? Am I smart enough to navigate the intricacies of municipal management, and help to actually improve the lives of the people I want to represent? Guess what, if you're asking yourselves these questions, you are ready to put those excuses away and take the next step. Filing ends by noon tomorrow, so take a deep breath and make the plunge.

Bravo Steve!

Looks like now is the time. I jumped into the little pond I live in today and filed for to run for mayor.

Hope I'm not too terrified to get out of bed tomorrow morning when I wake up and realize what I've done.

Have you got your breathing

under control yet? I had to pull out some Zen a few minutes ago, and it helped quite a bit:

I'm beginning to get shaky.

You are going to be just fine!

I wish I was close enough to come help you both!

Not trying to make it worse,

but I just got a call from a reporter, while I was driving my car. I said some things, hopefully not crazy things, and then she thanked me. So I'm thinking, "Did she thank me because what I said was all crazy and might sell a few more papers, or did she thank me because she thanks everybody that doesn't bark 'no comment!' at her?"

I...may have to actually read the paper tomorrow.

Rhetoric needs work

Of course I talked about more than this, but I need to learn that every sentence you speak needs to be able to stand on its own after the editor's scissors have slashed:

Steve Harrison, 55, filed for a Gibsonville alderman seat, and said he was interested in improving the town through forward planning.

“There are a lot of things that we probably need to be doing and should be doing to turn (Gibsonville) into a community and not just a collection of houses in a certain area,” he said. “I would like to see improvements to downtown and try to increase foot traffic.”

Ehhh. Needs garlic...

Oh....but it isn't all that bad

...but we need to talk :)

Listen

I think a big dimension of public service today is listening. The General Assembly has zero credibility in this area, and I don't see a lot of evidence of listening at the local level either.

The other big issue to consider, of course, is local control. Towns are going to need a whole lot of creativity to be able to be the masters of their own fate. Town managers are furious with the legislature and there WILL be some serious push back coming in the months ahead.

You're a good guy and you know your stuff. I hope you win.

Thank you, sir

I'll know by noon tomorrow how challenging the election will be. Or at least if it "is" going to be a challenge, anyway.

Scratch that...

I overlooked the fact my town straddles two counties. Not gonna be a cakewalk...

You'll be fine Steve

I'm slowly putting a shoestring plan together for my little campaign for mayor, but with a third candidate in the race this just got a lot more interesting.

Yeah, I saw that

Does that mean you'll have to do a Primary first, or is three candidates in the main election okay?

I'm still trying to decide if I even need (or want) a shoestring budget, but I'll probably spend a few hundred dollars to get some signs made. Gonna talk to a local guy hopefully Wednesday, and see if we can scratch together a plan for a few dozen road signs. It's not like there are fifty ways to get into Gibsonville... :)

You have to have a couple of signs.

Maybe just a couple, some of those solid plywood signs that look like they are going to be in place forever.

How can we help?

Not sure yet re help

I'm likely going under the $1,000 don't-have-to-report status, so I'm assessing the numbers now. Thanks, I very well may be asking for a few bucks in the coming days.
