Live from Iowa, it's.....what day is it?

vlog
Disappeared into the ether did my post, so I'm going to make this shorter, since the event is about to start.

You can see the feed (they tell me) over at JohnEdwards.com and they will have a live-blog as well.

So, let's get it started.

That's wonderful

Pretty smooth operation, Robert. I started a One Corps group for Lincoln County just this afternoon and I have already been contacted via email to let me know I can get VIP tickets and by phone to ask if I'm attending. That's pretty amazing. I'm trying to get a group together to go.

I got a call here...

asking if I'd like to attend
: )

Senator Edwards will be mentioning the OneCorps response in his speech - I won't give it away.

You mean the response that was so huge it

almost crashed the site? Well, it probably really was just database work, but it was down for a while.

Hmmm....wonder what you told the person who called. :-)

I started one in Lincoln County

There were only a handful of states with no chapters. That was much earlier in the day. I'm sure every state has at least one, now.

Hmmmm...... Personal

Hmmmm...... Personal Responsibility -- has been a mainstay of conservative rightwing propaganda for the last 10-15 years, shorthand for: "Suck out buddy, take care of yourself, I got mine; feel free to think you are in control!" Yeah, it sure is.
Facinating - how much conservative and right wing idiocy-lunacy will jump the brain-blood barrier in the Democratic Party this cycle? Lots we bet. Is it that we might not really understand rightwing tactics (my take)or perhaps some want to adopt Newt's winning ways (a slightly less likely bet)?

Or a less tin foil hat take might be

that personal responsibility is just that. You take responsibility for your own actions - something our Republican friends fail to do each and every time.

I believe in personal responsibility. I've brought my children up believing they are responsible for their own actions. It isn't the dog's fault, their parent's fault, their friend's fault. If they make a bad decision, it's their fault.

apples and oranges.

Republicans saying welfare moms in New Orleans need to just pull up their bootstraps is a completely different animal than Democrats saying let's go do something now to help these people.

I have a hard time seeing the connection when personal responsibility is couched in the same speech as "true universal health care", better labor organization, reversing the tax cuts, reversing global warming, and starting immediate troop reductions in Iraq. Doesn't sound very conservative.

McCain doctrine

= escalation of war

Great way of framing the argument.

"make it clear we're not going to stay in Iraq, and the best way to make it clear, is to start leaving"

I love that

pass that escalation label right on over to the torture candidate

who stand in the back hollering during the speech at a town hall meeting, which has time set aside for questions.

I see Edwards bought ads all over the Blogosphere.

Town Called Dobson included.

I guess he is running for real now.

I would like to talk about his message a bit - and to me it sounded like self-responsibility, not just for yourself but for your community. I liked that.

I wonder if the winner of this race will win by a different method than past contests? I wonder if America will reject out of hat typical politics and typical politicians. Maybe they will have had enough?

Maybe the winner will be the biggest breath of fresh air, maybe the winner will reflect, in their heart the America, the Citizens yearn for?

Maybe the playbook has been thrown out the window and it is a whole new game - and no one knows it yet?

Whatever the case, I figured something out about myself on a subconscious level. Edwards' is the only one in the race or close to running whose web site I read for any period of time. That must count for something.

You know...

some day I'll find the diary I posted, probably a year ago or more, saying that I wanted a candidate that would run on responsibility.

Personal responsibility.
Corporate responsibility.
Government responsibility.

Seems we think alike.

Question 1: immigration

basic Democratic position.

obey the rules, pay a fine for being here illegally, become a citizen. Don't deport 11 million workers.

Question 2: Deficit and Debt.

George Bush - we had surpluses, he turned it into deficits.

Honest answer, there is a tension between our desire to decrease the deficit AND our need to invest and make America strong in the 21st century.

do the math

cannot cut taxes, get rid of the deficit, and have universal health care, decrease poverty, etc.

There is a lot of money wasted in the budget...

... for defense spending. Half a trillion planned for 2007, more than 25% of our national tax receipts.

That and whatever earmarks were approved for the 109th Congress, those can be rolled back. I think there a lot of ways to do these things.

As for decreasing poverty, put import tariffs on crap coming from China and make it desirable to manufacture things here in the USA again.

Dump out of NAFTA, CAFTA and GATT.

Do those, and the "illegal alien" issue kinda goes away... mostly.

Stop subsidizing corporate America

that should pay for just about everything else.

That, and

roll back some of those tax cuts for the wealthy. And maybe get Exxon to pay the royalties they owe on gulf oil.

A good point.

I'd love to see Edwards buy 1 minute of prime time and show how many times over we could destroy China with nuclear weapons, then show how many times we could do it if the Chinese were able to destroy all of our land-based missiles in Europe, then all of the land-based missiles everywhere, then if they were able to destroy every one of our nuclear-capable airplanes, then every one of our nuclear capable ships, then all but ONE of our nuclear capable submarines.

I would love for him to show what we could do to China with one nuclear submarine. Then, say that if elected he'd cut our nuclear stockpile in half, unilaterally, and what we could do with the savings of $9 billion dollars a year.

Go watch this video.

Then, this one

Was too busy volunteering for the man to see all the media coverage of him.
