NC Wendys franchisee gets Chicky

If you're looking for another corporate bad actor to boycott, consider steering clear of Wendy's restaurants owned by the homophobes at Tarheel Capital. They recently posted signs declaring that they stand with Chick-Fil-A against equal rights for gay human beings.

What is with these people?

Wendy's bigotry

From an earlier post on BlueNC...Furman owns Wendy's--
$20,000 donation for marriage amendment

International Christian relief and evangelism charity organization Samaritan's Purse run by Franklin Graham contributed $150,200 towards newspaper and TV advertising in support of the NC Marriage Amendment, according to an Independent Expenditure report filed with the NC State Board of Elections.

A total of $272,593.70 was reported spent by the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association on full page ads in NC newspapers featuring the image of Billy Graham and words attributed to him and, on TV ads with similar content all with the legend "Paid for by the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association". $190,200 was reported as contributions from other persons or entities leaving $82,393.70 as the assumed direct contribution of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. Of the $190,200 contributed by others $150,200 came from Samaritan's Purse based in Boone, NC. $20,000 came from Mark DeMoss of Duluth, GA, and another $20,000 came from Dick Furman of Boone, NC. Mark DeMoss is an evangelical who runs a Christian PR agency and serves as an advisor to Mitt Romney. Dick Furman is a doctor who founded World Medical Mission which is part of the Samaritan's Purse organization, on whose board he sits.

I think this is an instance where a franchisee

decided he would use his soapbox to proselytize. Which is certainly his right.

The brand Wendy's seems to have a better corporate responsibility profile.

Would be an interesting field experiment to see whether consumers in his market area could put a dent in his sales this quarter and demonstrate the business risk of paranoid homophobia as a marketing ploy.

Come on eaters in the affected markets! Go local food for a month or two and see what happens!

Does this Wendy's franchisee have licenses

to operate on UNC Campuses? Maybe UNC should have a new purchasing policy that includes this clause:

No company doing business with the University of North Carolina System or the North Carolina Community College System may contribute in any way to any kind of political activity during the course of its contract.

Here's the way I see it...

These folks have every right to give their money to whomever they wish and to make whatever comments they wish. Based on my knowlege of and agreement/disagreement with them I can choose whether or not to patronize their businesses. It's inappropriate to try to ban them from doing business somewhere because of their long as they serve everyone who wishes to partake of whatever they offer for sale.

I also believe churches should pay property taxes, and any 501(c) that doesn't use 70-80% of it's donations to actually do charitable work should loose their tax exempt status and pay tax on those monies used to fund exorbitant salaries and perks for the organization.

Keep in mind these businesses (above) are privately owned. I personally don't plan to eat another chick fil-a or another Wendy's burger. They won't be missing much because I didn't eat there often anyhow. But, cumulatively, they'll feel it...over time...when the crowds of supporters move on and get back into their pattern of patronizing places close by...rather than finding the chick fil a some distance away. We have two in Wilmington, and neither of them are particularly easy in and out locations.

Not trying to ban them for their beliefs

I'm trying to ban them from doing business with local, state and federal government agencies and organizations if they are involved in ANY political activity.

Want to be a lobbyist? Fine. But you give up your right to have government contracts.

Want to influence elections? Fine. You give up your right to have government contracts.

Contracts of all kinds come with an infinite range of requirements. Why not use the lure of government contracts as a way to shut down corporate spending that has been allowed by Citizens United?

This is a new idea, so of course there will be problems with it. Just trying to think outside the box.

PS When I sign employment contracts, I routinely have to make agreements and promises that restrict my rights, sometimes well into the future. Companies shouldn't expect anything different.
