"Tell me what a Police State Looks Like" by Cindy Sheehan

“Pittsburgh is what a police state looks like!”
I have been to dozens of protests, large and small, since my son was killed in Iraq, but I have never seen anything like today and the only term I can use is: Profound Overkill. There were easily two cops/soldiers for every one of us protesters…or maybe even 3 to 1.
About two thousand of us gathered in Arsenal Park in Pittsburgh to try and march downtown. We were all peaceful and had no weapons. We had only traveled a few blocks when cops dressed like they were in full combat with heavily armed opponents stopped us and blocked our way with a new weapon called “LRAD:” A new “crowd control” device. LRAD stands for: “Long Range Acoustical Device.” I was, unfortunately near it when the cops turned it on. It’s painful.

What are we becoming here?

Cindy Sheehan?

MadTown, I think we should not use this woman's quest to use here "notariety" as she is doing. I know I am an anomaly here sometimes and sometimes seen as an "anti", but we liberals and left leaning realists (where I see myself) here have to take a step back with regard to this lady and make sure we are not just feeding what I feel is her true intent. Much of what she has done and said has created a bond between the political moderates and the republican party in my opinion.

I'll most certainly catch the devil here for this, but, just as the right defends the "Rushes" of our world and just as we hate how that transpires, we have to make sure we don't defend or give a lot of credence to the "Cindy Sheehans" of the world.

I'll sit in waiting for the backlash of what I have said here.

Cindy Sheehan is a hero to be emulated

She was the lone voice that was heard during the long hot summer of 2005 when dissent was being being vilified and only the mother of a fallen soldier could stand up and demand truth.

To my mind she her actions epitomize free speech. I admire her strength of character for sticking it out through those weeks in Crawford. George had met the enemy and it was he, himself.

Real Liberals? Whatever that is?

I'll sit in waiting for the backlash of what I have said here.* Foxtrot

Why wait? Join the Military Corporate Industrial Complex, Health-Insurace Industrial Corporate Complex, The Prison Industrial Corporate Complex, and learn how to cobber our individual rights of Free Speech, and what makes you think that you are "but we liberals and left leaning realists (where I see myself" a confirmed Glenn Beck " Realist" in Reverse?

Go Cindy....expose the Bastards!!!!!!!!

I hear it. I expected it. It's okay, MadTown...It's all good.

From Wikipedia, just so we all understand about Sheehan:

Wikipedia article
Cindy Sheehan's son Casey was a conscientious objector who nevertheless joined the US Army in a non-combatant role in the motor pool. He was ordered and then forced into combat against his will, and was killed in action. She attracted international attention in August 2005 for her extended demonstration at a camp outside President George W. Bush's Texas ranch, garnering her both support and criticism.

In May 2007, Sheehan officially ended her involvement as an anti-war activist, saying "I am going to go home and be a mother to my surviving children and try to regain some of what I have lost." However, on July 23, 2007, after Bush's reduction of the sentence of Scooter Libby, Sheehan announced that she plans to challenge Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi in a congressional election as an Independent because Pelosi failed to introduce articles of impeachment against Bush.

I served in the military for 4 years. No one is inducted into the military as a "conscietious objector".

In 2005, “Peace Mom” Cindy Sheehan ignited the US peace movement by camping out next to President George Bush’s Crawford Ranch in Texas. Mr. Bush refused to meet with Cindy to answer her question: “For what noble purpose was my son, Casey, sent to die in Iraq?” Since that summer, Cindy has traveled the US and abroad exposing the myths that continue to send thousands of US servicemen and women to their deaths, as well as countless Iraqi civilians. During her travels, Cindy was regularly vilified in the press, received countless death threats, and was hounded by false patriots claiming that she was a traitor who betrayed the honorable sacrifice of her son, Casey.

In 2007, Cindy challenged Democratic Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi, who had taken the impeachment of George Bush and Dick Cheney “off the table.” During this challenge, Cindy was ignored by the corporate press, despite heroic efforts to gain 10,000 signatures to qualify her for a place on the ballot as an independent candidate. Nancy Pelosi, the darling of the Democratic Party, won re-election with 72% of the vote in California’s 8th District.

Since the 2008 election, Cindy has launched a national radio program, and is the author of “Myth America—10 Greatest Myths of the Robber Class and the Case for Revolution”
Joining Cindy Sheehan for their first ever joint appearance will be Lt. Col Robert Bowman (USAF Ret.) Col. Bowman is President of the Institute for Space and Security Studies and the recipient of the Eisenhower Medal, the George F. Kennan Peace Prize, and the President's Medal of Veterans for Peace. He is one of the country's foremost authorities on national security.
Colonel Bowman flew 101 combat missions as a fighter pilot in Vietnam and directed all the Department of Defense "Star Wars" programs under presidents Ford and Carter. His Ph.D. is in Aeronautics and Nuclear Engineering from Caltech. He has lectured at the National War College, the United Nations, Congressional Caucuses, the Academies of Science of six nations, and the House of Lords.
Dr. Bob Bowman ran for President in the Reform Party in 2000 and was the Democratic candidate for the US Congress from the 15 th Congressional District of Florida in 2006. Bob’s website is
Bob and Cindy criticize both Republican and Democrat administrations, America’s wars, the war economy, the banking industry, the US torture regime that produced false confessions about the 9/11 attacks on the US, and much more.
The Program
Introductions of Cindy and Bob will be provided by historical representations of Julia Ward Howe’s memorable 1870 Mother’s Day call for women of the world to unite against war, and Marine General Smedley Butler’s 1935 reflection “War is a Racket.”
The Question
Who among the rising generation will take up this banner and work tirelessly for peace?

Tour schedule: Asheville (10/23), Statesville (10/24), Charlotte (10/25), Wilmington (10/26) and Raleigh (10/27) to see two of America’s foremost peacemakers of this generation.

Cops Beat The Crap Out Of Pitt U Students last Night

Police tactics used to disperse a large student assembly at the University of Pittsburgh on Friday evening have become the focus of an Internet media firestorm.

Multiple videos of the police action against apparently peaceful students have surfaced on the Internet. Confirmed details apart from recordings are scarce at this hour, but the first clip included below shows two officers in riot gear hitting a young female with batons, while others show numerous seemingly random arrests taking place as students were forced out of the public areas on campus by police firing tear gas and other projectiles

There were soooo many other ways to contain these folks

What the heck is happening these days? I mean, are there not a heck of a lot more ways to contain these folks? I am not sanctioning protests that violate the law, but "protests" against government action is not only our right but our privilege and more than that, what we are asked to do it in just so many of the presentations by our country's founders.

I'm appalled that there was so many defenses on this. It seems just a bit overboard, to me. Maybe I am missing something here, but if so, someone has to show me how.

I, too, wonder what's going on

when you can show up to protest Obama's policies armed with a semi-automatic weapon and nobody beats you up or.... oh wait a minute :)

Demands from Cindy Sheehan to the Mayor and Police Chief of Pittsburgh and the Gov of Pa and Prez of the UPSA

Dear Men,
I am calling you “Men” because I am loathe to call you “gentlemen” due to fact that the behavior of your hired thugs in the City of Pittsburgh on the days of September 24 and 25 was shameful. True gentlemen would never allow such violence to be perpetrated from heavily armed and armored grown men to our children.
I have been watching the propaganda news about the protests against the G20 meetings here in Pittsburgh and all of the blame is placed on the activists. These are pure fabrications.
I was in the thick of things here in Pittsburgh for two and a half days and I can assure you that ALL of the violence I witnessed, and I witnessed many acts (I, myself, was even tear gassed, threatened with drawn guns, attacked by an LRAD {Long Range Acoustic Device} and verbally abused and harassed by your storm troopers) was instigated/perpetrated by cops/military that seemed far better equipped than our soldiers in combat zones. My son would probably still be alive if he had the equipment of your Urban-American invaders/occupiers.
Besides resisters being targeted, the weapons that were used by the paid thugs were used in residential neighborhoods or college campuses with accompanying and significant “collateral damage.” I witnessed a 60ish year-old woman having a panic attack on her doorstep in Lawrenceville and mothers with babies getting caught in your crap-storm.
I saw one young student name Matt on his bike near his dorm at UPITT being violently tackled by one of your goons and he was just trying to get to his dorm room. I saw two young people named Emily and Max shot with rubber bullets for the crime of walking down the street.
I and about 2000 other people were brutally attacked when we were all just peaceably gathering to march to express our First Amendment rights. Not one window was broken, not one trashcan was overturned, when about 10 minutes into the march, we were prohibited from the free expression of our rights.
I was in Schenley Plaza last night with three of my friends just observing the police brutality, when we were chased away with weapons and tear gas and we had to run about two miles from your goons to stay safe. I am still suffering the affects of the tear gas ten hours later and am so sick, I could not get on a plane this morning. We were not, and the young people were not, doing anything illegal.

Welcome to the Police State

Some causes of the rising Police State, in no particular order:

1. Hero-worship of the repressive state apparatus (police, military, DEA, SWAT, etc), partially caused by absurd volume of TV media portraying state agents as heroes
2. Pretext of terrorism
3. General public ignorance due to media control
4. A government that is increasingly afraid of its people
5. A growing minority of people that are increasingly afraid of and angry at their government
6. Federalization/militarization of local and state police forces
7. Bloated police and "national defense" budgets

Probably many more...

Troublesome videos, without question

Quigley, you have presented some very troublesome videos of some very bad problems within our system. No one can argue that. But, you must know that for every one of those incidents of alleged wrongdoing by our law enforcement officials, there are tens of thousands of good incidents where those that are asked to watch after the public trust have done fabulous work and have acted in the correct way.

We are a country that has hundreds of thousands of law enforcement officials. And, even though I believe each and every one of them should do the right thing in each and every incident, I know they do not. Those that do not should be called on it and not be allowed to "serve" the public trust.

Exceptions do not disprove the rule here. It makes me sad to watch that video but I appreciate you posting it and hopefully it has been made available to our law enforcement management personnel in our country.
