GOVERNOR COOPER REMOVES SEXUALLY-HARASSING MCCRORY APPOINTEE FROM LOTTERY COMMISSION: Gov. Roy Cooper has ousted a state lottery commissioner for what the governor says were "sexually harassing" and "racially insensitive" comments to staff members and others at the N.C. Lottery Commission. Griffin, a Durham real estate company executive, was appointed to the commission in 2016 by then-Gov. Pat McCrory, who made him the chairman. “Your sexually harassing comments directed at Lottery Commission officers, staff and commission members have created a hostile work environment. Female staff members have requested to not meet with you alone. Your racially insensitive comments directed at lottery partners do not represent the values of the governor or the North Carolina Lottery.”

AMERICAN WORKPLACES ARE BECOMING INCREASINGLY HOSTILE ENVIRONMENTS: The American workplace is grueling, stressful and surprisingly hostile. So concludes an in-depth study of 3,066 U.S. workers by the Rand Corp., Harvard Medical School and the University of California, Los Angeles. Among the findings: — Nearly one in five workers — a share the study calls “disturbingly high” — say they face a hostile or threatening environment at work, which can include sexual harassment and bullying. Workers who have to face customers endure a disproportionate share of abuse. Only 38 percent say their jobs offer good prospects for advancement. And the older they get, the less optimistic they become. About half say they work on their own time to meet the demands of their job.

DURHAM SHERIFF PLANS ON PRESSING CHARGES AGAINST ACTIVISTS WHO PULLED DOWN CONFEDERATE STATUE: A North Carolina sheriff is working to identify and charge protesters who toppled a nearly century-old Confederate statue. Durham County Sheriff Mike Andrews issued a statement Tuesday that investigators are using video footage to identify those responsible for toppling the statue. Law enforcement officers took video throughout the protest Monday in downtown Durham. But they didn't intervene as demonstrators climbed a ladder, attached a rope and then pulled down the statue. The protest was in response to violence at a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, over the weekend. Andrews said he chose to exercise restraint. He said he met with county leaders and protest organizers beforehand and was aware of the potential for vandalism.

LOGAN SMITH RECEIVING DEATH THREATS FOR OUTING CHARLOTTESVILLE RACISTS: Social media can be a powerful tool when news happens and Logan Smith found out just how powerful this weekend. “They are saying they are going to kill me, insulting my wife, insulting my family,” Smith said. The negative comments are coming from people he called out on Twitter for participating in the rally in Charlottesville. Smith, who is the communications director for Progress NC, is the face behind the Twitter account called “Yes, You’re Racist.” He started the account during the 2012 presidential campaign, but when he saw the images coming out of Virginia, he wanted to do something about it. “One thing I did was to ask people if they recognized any of these people to just send me the names and public profiles and I will make them famous,” Smith said. Despite the fact that he is now receiving death threats for the posts made on the Twitter account, he said he will continue to speak for what he believes is right.

AMERICAN NAZIS PLAN MORE RALLIES STARTING THIS WEEKEND: More alt-right rallies are scheduled for the coming Saturday, in at least nine cities. These events will provide an important barometer for the future of this movement, depending on how many people turn out, who those people are, and how they conduct themselves. For the alt-right, the coming weekend represents a critical test—which may reveal it gathering force, dissipating, or changing in significant ways. By Saturday night, it may be clear where it’s headed. The events scheduled for this coming Saturday—a “free speech” rally in Boston and marches scheduled in nine cities to protest Google’s firing of an employee who wrote a screed against diversity—will help clarify where all the chaotic elements that comprise the alt-right are headed in the near-term future.
