Walter Jones Intervenes in Duke Case

The Winston-Salem Journal is reporting that Congressman Walter Jones has requested the assistance of US Attorney General Alberto Gonzales in determining whether Mike Nifong has violated the civil rights of the Duke lacrosse players accused of rape.

According to the Journal:

GOP Rep. Walter Jones wants the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate whether the district attorney prosecuting three Duke University lacrosse players charged with rape has violated their civil rights.

More below the fold...

In his letter to U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, Jones also asked the Justice Department to review Durham County District Attorney Mike Nifong's actions to determine whether they constitute prosecutorial misconduct.

Jones says that he and his constituents have concerns about the case. He references doubts about the case that have surfaced based on reports in the media.

We haven't written much about this case and I'm glad. Now, though, one of our congressmen has stepped in and that sure does make me go hmmmm. How about you?

Comments

As a member in good standing of the Do-Nothing Congress

Jones has mostly been a worthless whiner for the past few years. Some big donor has leaned on him to get involved in this case. The tentacles of Duke alumns run deep in the circles of the Party of Greed.

Nuh unh

It took a lot of effort and creativity to rename french fries.

I will admit

that some of the news that's come out sure makes Nifong look like an imbecile....or worse.

Then again, that could be the intent of the defense team.

There's no doubt Nifong is an imbecile

I just don't get why Jone is getting involved. It's like he's all of a sudden decided to make intervening in court cases his cause celebre. It's weird, especially in this case where all the lawyers that money can buy is being spent on behalf of the LAX players.

No telling

what his motives are. No telling.

Jonesing

Maybe he's messing around in NC-04 trying to rattle David Price because Henry Waxman is picking on Blackwater who have facilities in Camden County in Jones' District and because Price introduced the TASC Act (Transparency and Accountability in Security Contracting) last year after working on it with Waxman, among others.

What Kind of Idiot?

This is a case where everyone involved seems to suffer a ruined reputation. So far as this case is concerned, is anyone proud of the LaCross players, the alleged victim, The City of Durham, Duke University, Mike Nifong, or now Congressman Walter Jones?

Anyone who associates themselves with this God forsaken drama is left the worse for it. Rep. Jones happened along an hour after the pile up and then ran his own car into the wreckage just for sport. So I'm left to wonder, what kind of idiot would volunteer for a car wreck?

I'm 56 years old. I moved to North Carolina five years ago. The previous twenty-five years I spent as a resident of Chicago's north shore and before that Wisconsin, Utah and California. I live in Moore County. My Congressman is Howard Coble, my State Sen

What kind of idiot?

Influential Dookies

-Have bought the best attorneys money can buy.

-Bought an "unaffiliated" opponent for Nifong in the DA race. He lost.

-Tried to convince the Republican write-in candidate to drop out of the DA's race. They even got an assist from Rufus Edmisten. Rufus failed, and the GOPer lost, too.

-Have complained to the state Bar Association and the Justice Dept about Nifong.

-Now, they have apparently bought themselves a Congressman. Not the one that represents Durham now (David Price) or the one that used to represent Durham (Bob Etheridge) or the one that represented Durham before that (Mel Watt). Redistricting is a funny thing, but we've never been stuck with Walter (Freedom Fries) Jones. Maybe Walter is afraid we will find a Larry Kissell clone to run against him in '08, so he is gonna collect some Duke cash and try to shore up the white vote at the same time.

Why go to all this trouble trying to smear Nifong? If the Duke laxers are innocent, why not just take it to a jury, show reasonable doubt, and prove Nifong wrong? Why not earn your attorney's fees in the courtroom? Because they are afraid to let this case go to trial and are trying every possible avenue to keep it from happening.

Although Nifong's public statements early in the case were not appropriate, what is he supposed to do now, drop the case? What if the Duke laxers did it? Let 'em walk, anyway?

What if the defendents were black NC Central students and the victim was a innocent white Duke student? I bet Walter Jones, and various wealthy Dookie alums, would be in Nifong's corner then.

Freedom Frats

According to the N&O:

Jones' letter apparently came in response to a letter from an attorney for Finnerty. Michael Cornacchia of New York City had written to federal officials, senators and congressional representatives, including the entire North Carolina delegation, asking them to support a federal investigation into Nifong's actions.

I don't care much for Nifong but carpet bombing officials with letters to intimidate him is only going to make him a martyr.

Seems like Jones is the only one to take the bait. Maybe he doesn't realise the campaign is "Freedom Frats" not "Freedom Fries" and his fish will be fried eventually.

She had sex with everyone

except ANY member of the Duke Lacrosse team. If this article is correct, this case should have been dismissed months ago. These guys could be the biggest assholes in the world, but that's not against the law. I realize this is just one piece to a very complicated case, but it is pretty damning for the prosecution.

Maybe light does need to shine a bit brighter on this case from the national stage.

Not enough light to go around

When the Jonesman decides it's time to shine a light on the complete corruption of the Bush administration and its relationships with Haliburton, etc., then I'll have some sympathy for his meddling in this particular tawdry affair. We have an independent judiciary and at least the illusion that politics aren't supposed to enter into court decisions.

Maybe we should get some librul judge to publicly ask Jones why he spends taxpayer money every quarter sending me bullshit emails about how I can get ready for whatever (winter, hurricane season, blah blah).

This case was in the spotlight for months on the national stage and now it is moving slowly through the court system, which is where it belongs. If it needs to be thrown out, a judge will say so. If the judge doesn't say so, the there will be an appeal. At the end of all that, there's always the certain pardon of the Dukies by whatever governor money can buy.

Until all that happens, Jones should stay in the kitchen with his freedom flies and catch up on US Government 101.

Sick Durham County

Todd: If the defendents were black and the accuser white, we never would have seen such a fuss to begin with: no potbangers, no candlelight vigils, no New Black Panthers arriving screaming death threats, etc. Everybody in the country now knows this was an anti-white, anti-male, and any northerner lynching. It revealed the ugly side of Durham County (a county overrun with REAL crime) especially when they hatefully elected a D.A. who actually conspired with a private lab to hide the truth. The Duke 3 are innocent, as science has proven, but Durham County will still be stuck with a dishonest Nifong sitting on future cases, including capital punishment cases. Durham County has sown the wind, now let them reap the whirlwind. -Mike
