Editor Update

BlueNC home of progressive North Carolina politics

I have reverted back to our old content editor. CKeditor is a really powerful editor and is very widely used. Something was fighting with it. We can try it out again after the election in November, but none of us has time for a learning curve right now.

Please let me know if you have any issues. You can reach me under the technical contact on our contact form linked to in the menu bar above.

Happy Retirement Day James

For those of us who have been a part of North Carolina's political blogging scene for more than a few years, James Protzman stands as a leader in the political blogging movement. Long before newspapers paid journalists to blog, James, along with Lance and John, provided a megaphone for the rest of us. Today, we are celebrating his return to full-time blogging.

HA! Just kidding. Today, James's friends and colleagues are gathering to celebrate his retirement from paid work. I make the distinction because blogging is hard work too...we just don't get paid to do it!

BlueNC is going on vacation

Yes, we are on our way to an exotic locale to enjoy a couple of days of rest and relaxation. The exclusive resort known as Drupal 7 is our ultimate destination and the trip comes complete with little umbrella drinks and gourmet meals served at poolside. I have given Steve and James the next few days off while I complete the upgrade. If you are an admin, please do not create content during this time. It will not migrate over. What can you expect when BlueNC returns?

  • a responsive design that makes it easier for you to access, read, and blog on BlueNC whether you are on a desktop, laptop, tablet or mobile device
  • a better text editor that makes it easier to style your blog posts and add images
  • better integration with social media
  • ...and coming soon we will have content collections that make it easier to find the information you are looking for

Blogs live forever

Just checked out some of my old blogs. I know it's hard to believe, but I'm not always sweet. Remember this....you can't hide from your blog posts.

I found this post

IN MEMORY OF MAJOR JAMES MICHAEL AHEARN

Remember (you probably don't...it was 7 years ago) when I lost my friend Major James Michael Ahearn in Iraq. I blogged about it. For some reason when you write about something it eases some of the pain. I'm happy to report that his widow, after traveling the US trying to find "the place" settled in Arlington, VA. Yes, it's because the cemetery is close by and she visits often. Her daughter was an infant when Jim was killed, but she is a beautiful young lady now. AND, she has a new man in her life and a new daughter. Can you believe we are still in Iraq? She is from Iraq and always asks people to pray for her country. James has the only Muslim/Islam grave marker in the cemetery. He converted shortly before he was killed.

BlueNC Maintenance Scheduled

Happy Sunday evening folks. We will have BlueNC down for maintenance this evening beginning at 9:00 p.m. for updates to some modules as we head into our big upgrade. If all goes well, we will be up and running again before I fall asleep before midnight.

I'm sorry for any inconvenience.

Change is good

We are about to begin the process of upgrading BlueNC to a spiffy responsive design that will work beautifully on any size screen without loss of functionality or content regardless of whether the site is accessed on a desktop, laptop, tablet, or phone.

There will be some unavoidable structural changes because we are upgrading versions of Drupal, but hopefully they will enhance the site.

We've always sought to keep BlueNC lean - though we've tried a few functions and features that were ultimately removed. We may look for new features for the site once we have the initial upgrade completed.

If you have any ideas or suggestions, please speak up in the comments. I know I speak for the entire admin and front page team when I say we would love to hear from you.

Most of the work will happen late at night, but I will notify you in advance so I don't take the site down in the middle of anyone's blog post masterpiece.
